Wood drives in 6 RBIs in win over Central Oklahoma to lead Tarleton to Saturday split

STEPHENVILLE – Nyka Wood drove in six RBIs and became the fourth TexAnn in school history to hit three doubles in a single game to lead Tarleton past Central Oklahoma 9-2 Saturday afternoon in a TexAnn doubleheader split.

Game 1: No. 10 Tarleton 9, Central Oklahoma 2

Nyka Wood had a career showing at the dish as the sophomore catcher went 3-for-4 with three doubles, a run scored, and six RBIs to lead the TexAnns over Central Oklahoma in the first game of Saturday's twin bill at the Rattler Invitational.

The sophomore from North Richland Hills joins Tamra Bradley, Katie Welborn, and Samantha Swanda as the only TexAnns to record three doubles in a game.

Wood's first double came for the first two runs of the game when she plated Melody Mayse and Katelyn Conlee, who reached on a walk and error, respectively. Mikayla Stogsdill capped off the three-run first inning with an RBI single to plate Wood. Tarleton scored two more in the second on an error and a wild pitch to jump out to a quick 5-0 lead after one and a half.

After a scoreless third, Wood struck again with another two-run double – this time to center field to bring home Stech and Mayse for a 7-0 Tarleton lead. After Central Oklahoma scored in the ensuing half inning, Wood cranked her third 2-run double of the game for Tarleton's last runs.

Haley Freyman earned her ninth win of the season with a complete game, allowing two runs – only one earned – on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts. It is Freyman's ninth complete game of the season and boasts a 1.39 ERA in 75.1 innings of work through Saturday's first game.

The Tarleton offense supplied Freyman with nine runs on nine hits, including multi-hit efforts from Wood and Mayse. Stech, Stogsdill, Avery Mullendore, and Lauren Powers rounded out the Tarleton offense.

Game 2: Texas A&M International 9, Tarleton 2

In the second game, Tarleton fell to Texas A&M International 9-2 as the Dustdevils scored seven unanswered runs over the final four innings to send the TexAnns to their fifth loss of the young season.

The Dustdevils scored first with a pair of RBI hits, but Tarleton answered in the ensuing half inning to cut the lead in half with an RBI fielder's choice from Rebeka Allen. Allen scored Mayse, who led off the inning with an infield single to second base.

After a scoreless second, Tarleton tied the game with Wood's seventh RBI of the afternoon into right field to plate Stech and even the score at 2-2. From there, however, International proceeded to score five in the fourth, one in the sixth, and one more in the seventh to bring the game to its final score.

Freyman took the loss with 3.1 innings of work. Shelby Hedrick pitched the final 3.2 innings and allowed just two runs and struck out three.

Tarleton had nine base hits in the game, including two-hit games from Taylor Fitzgerald and Lauren Powers. Mayse, Stech, Conlee, Wood, and Amanda Conner had one hit each.

The TexAnns will return to action tomorrow against Oklahoma Christian at 10 a.m. to wrap up their schedule of the Rattler Invitational.
