TexAnn bats, Hedrick’s gem deliver Tarleton sweep of Falcons Tuesday

ODESSA – The offense exploded in game one and Shelby Hedrick hurled her first career complete game shutout as the TexAnns capped off a dominant sweep of Texas-Permian Basin Tuesday.

Game 1: Tarleton 12, Texas-Permian Basin 5

Tarleton slugged out 13 hits and scored 12 runs in the opening game of Tuesday's doubleheader to blast the Texas-Permian Basin Falcons.

Tarleton got the scoring started in the top of the second when Taylor Fitzgerald, who made her first career start in the Tarleton outfield, ripped an RBI double to centerfield to bring home Savannah Stech for a 1-0 Tarleton lead. The TexAnns tacked on another after Melody Mayse laced a single and stole second, which allowed Fitzgerald to score on a throwing error by the catcher on the steal attempt.

The Falcons clawed back with one in the ensuing half inning to make it 2-1, which carried to the fourth inning when Tarleton exploded for a five spot.

After a Stech single and Alyssa Ringhausen walk started off the inning, Fitzgerald struck again with a two-RBI single into center to plate the pair, extend the lead to 4-1, and chase the Falcon starter from the game. The TexAnn offense welcomed the new pitcher into the game with a two-run single from Avery Mullendore and the final RBI hit of the inning from Rebeka Allen to push the Tarleton lead to 7-1.

Once again, the Falcons chipped back with two more runs – making the score 7-3 – but Tarleton would not be denied as the TexAnns scored three more in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Stech and a two-run home run from Ringhausen to crack double digits in the run column.

Tarleton added another two-run blast from Nyka Wood in the top of the seventh to finish things off.

Eight of the nine hitters in Tarleton's lineup collected a hit in the 13-hit Tarleton attack, led by a 3-for-3 performance from Savannah Stech. Melody Mayse, Allen, and Fitzgerald each had two hits while Mullendore, Wood, Katelyn Conlee, and Ringhausen also found their way into the hit parade.

In the circle, Haley Freyman threw her fourth complete game in Tarleton's last five games with seven innings of work, allowing five runs – four earned – on 11 hits with five strikeouts.

Game 2: Tarleton 2, Texas-Permian Basin 0

Shelby Hedrick fired her first career complete game shutout as the junior from Forney limited the Falcons to just two base hits and delivered the sweep Tuesday afternoon.

Hedrick was nearly flawless in her second win of the season as the right-hander faced just one batter over the minimum in her first complete game win. She allowed a two-out single in the second and then nothing more until a one-out single in the seventh, which was erased on a game-ending double play to cap off the gem. She had three strikeouts in the game.

Meanwhile, Tarleton scored one in the first on a Nyka Wood RBI single and an unearned run on a Falcon error in the second for a quick 2-0 lead, which is all that Hedrick would need. For the game, Tarleton got two hits each from Stech and Ringhausen and then one each from Mayse, Wood, and Delaney Wayland.

Tarleton will look to carry the momentum back to Stephenville when the TexAnns host Angelo State this weekend at 4 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
