THE GAMES
In the heat of the Lone Star Conference playoff race, Tarleton makes its final regular season road trip of the year this weekend when the TexAnns travel to Kingsville for a four-game series with the Javelinas. Friday's doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. with the Saturday twin bill on tab for 2 p.m.
Â
THE PLAYOFF OUTLOOK
Tarleton holds a one-game lead over Texas A&M-Kingsville for seventh place in the Lone Star Conference standings as both teams look to overtake Midwestern State for the sixth and final spot in the LSC Championship Tournament. Tarleton is two games behind Midwestern State, who is on the road at Cameron this weekend. The LSC Tournament will take the top six teams in the league standings for its single elimination tournament on April 29-30 in Canyon. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Â
THE TEXANNS
Tarleton is coming off a series win against then-No. 22 Cameron in Stephenville last weekend and improved its record to 25-22 on the year and 8-16 in Lone Star Conference action.
Haley Freyman continues to make her case for postseason accolades as the sophomore right-hander leads the LSC in wins (20), innings pitched (203.1), complete games (27); is second in the league in strikeouts (116); and is third in the league in ERA (2.58).
Â
THE OPPONENT
Kingsville enters the weekend with a record of 18-29 and 7-17 in LSC action. The Javelinas are the only team in the league with a sub-.300 batting average, led by Rachel Longoria with a .333 batting average. Kari Smith leads the team from the circle as she has pitched in 30 games and has a 4.56 ERA.
Â
THE SERIES
Tarleton and Texas A&M-Kingsville have met 73 times in their 19-year history, which dates back to 1997. The TexAnns hold a 43-30 lead in the all-time series, including an even 18-18 mark in Kingsville. The TexAnns have won 22 of the last 29 since 2007.
Â
THE LAST TIME OUT
Tarleton took three of four from then-No. 22 Cameron in Stephenville last weekend. With the help of a five-run sixth inning in the opening game of the series,Â
Haley Freyman pitched Tarleton to a split Friday. After rain delayed the series finale to Sunday, Tarleton won two games in the two-most opposite ways possible Sunday afternoon – a 2-1 pitcher's duel in the first game and a 14-5 rout on a season-high 17 base hits in game two – to claim the series victory.
Â
UP NEXT FOR TARLETON
The TexAnns will return home for senior weekend and the regular season finale with a four-game series against Eastern New Mexico on April 22.Â
