WICHITA FALLS – No. 14 Tarleton moved one step closer to securing its second Lone Star Conference championship in school history Friday night as the TexAnns (23-5, 15-2 LSC) handled Midwestern State (13-14, 6-11 LSC) in four (25-13, 25-21, 24-26, 25-14).
If Texas A&M-Commerce loses at Western New Mexico tonight, the TexAnns can secure a share of the title and will control their own destiny for the outright championship tomorrow in Cameron at 2 p.m.
Tarleton opened things up in the first set with two quick surges to pull away to a 14-7 lead. A Mustang service error started a 5-0 run for the TexAnns to turn an early 4-4 tie into a 9-4 Tarleton lead. Four points later,
Hailey Roberts landed a kill to start a 4-0 surge to double up the Mustangs after 21 points.
After the TexAnns carried their seven-point lead to 20-13 advantage,
Hannah McManus powered home the first of three consecutive kills to start a set-clinching 5-0 run.
Adriana Darthuy and
Blanca Izquierdo scored the set's final two points with a kill and a service ace to give Tarleton a 25-13 win in the opening set.
In the second set, the match stayed tight over the opening 25 points as Tarleton held a slim 13-12 advantage before back-to-back errors by Midwestern State and a kill from
Amber Strange extended Tarleton's lead out to 16-12. The Mustangs never got closer than three the rest of the set and a kill from
Chandler Gow sealed things up with a 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead.
After a 26-24 setback in the third, Tarleton rebounded in a way big to win the fourth set 25-14. The TexAnns jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead and rode the advantage to a 21-14 lead before Tarleton scored four straight, including three straight kills from Darthuy (2) and Gow, to close the set at 25-14 and the match 3-1.
Tarleton boasted three players with double-digit kills, led by
Hailey Roberts with 17 to go along with 19 digs for her 80
th career double-double. Darthuy and McManus each powered home 11 kills while
Jordyn Keamo dished out 43 assists and had 11 digs for a double-double effort.
Adrianna Knutson led the team with 28 digs as the TexAnn defense held Midwestern State to an .061 hitting effort on the night.
