TexAnns top Northwestern Oklahoma as Freyman earns 50th career win

GRAND PRAIRIE – Tarleton pitcher Haley Freyman became the third TexAnn in school history with 50 pitching victories in her career when the TexAnns won the first game in the final doubleheader of the North Texas Softball Bash Sunday afternoon at Jennifer McFalls Park.

"I was proud of the way we played today," said head coach Mark Cumpian. "As far as Haley's milestone, I couldn't be more proud, not only of the type of pitcher she has been for our program, but I'm also extremely proud of the person and teammate she it. This is a great accomplishment for her, but if I know Haley, she is worried more about Texas A&M-Commerce next weekend.

"We fought from start to finish and just fell short in game two against a very solid pitcher. Now we'll come home and turn our attention to Texas A&M-Commerce as we prepare to start Lone Star Conference play."

Game 1: Tarleton 8, Northwestern Oklahoma State 1

Tarleton pounded out 10 hits and plated eight runs to back Haley Freyman's fifth complete game of the season as the junior pitcher notched win No. 50 in her Tarleton career – moving her into a tie for second place all-time with Jill Ratliff (1999-02).

Freyman tossed all seven innings, keeping the Rangers in check to the tune of one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four. The right-hander from North Richland Hills was a groundball machine as Freyman forced 15 outs on the dirt.

Meanwhile, the offense provided plenty of runs – beginning with a three spot in the first inning.

Maddie Quintanar, who leads the team with a .472 batting average through the first 11 games of the season, got things started with a single and a stolen base. She eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Conner before Nyka Wood plated the second run with an RBI single to right center. Megan Durante brought Wood around to score with an RBI triple for a quick 3-0 Tarleton lead.

Tarleton added two more in the third on RBI singles from Meghann Wrinkle and Quintanar, as well as another two in the fourth on a 2-RBI double from Mikayla Stogsdill for commanding 7-0 advantage. The final Tarleton run came in the fifth when Savannah Stech plated Wrinkle for an 8-0 lead.

The Rangers struck for a solo run in the bottom of the fifth but could do no more damage against Freyman as Tarleton took the win.

Tarleton got two-hit efforts from Stech, Wood, Stogsdill, and Wrinkle while Quintanar and Durante had one each to round out the 10-hit attack.

Game 2: Regis (CO) 3, Tarleton 2

Tarleton and starter Kayleigh Williams found themselves on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel in the tournament finale as the TexAnns fell to Regis 3-2.

Williams dialed up crucial strikeouts all afternoon as the TexAnn sat down seven Rangers via the 'K' as she allowed three runs on 11 hits and a walk, but three RBI singles – two in the fifth and one in the sixth – proved to be too much for the offense to overcome despite a two-run rally in the seventh.

Quintanar sparked the rally with a leadoff single and stolen base. After Stech reached on a walk, a passed ball and a Stech stolen base set the TexAnns up with runners on second and third with no one out. After a strikeout, Nyka Wood drove home a run with a groundout before Avery Mullendore cashed in with an RBI single for Tarleton's second run. A groundout in the next at bat ended the rally for Tarleton.

Tarleton had six hits on the afternoon, including three from Quintanar in the leadoff spot. Mullendore had a two-hit outing while Stech had one.

The TexAnns will make their home debut next weekend when they play host to Texas A&M-Commerce Friday at 6 p.m. in Stephenville.
