Cumpian era of TexAnn Softball makes Stephenville debut in LSC opener

THE GAMES
After opening the season 7-4 in tournament play, Tarleton is set to make its home debut this weekend with a three-game series against Texas A&M-Commerce to open Lone Star Conference play. The TexAnns will host the Lions for one game Friday night at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE TEXANNS
Tarleton is off to a 7-4 start, which includes a 12-2 win over Lubbock Christian at the North Texas Softball Bash last weekend that saw the TexAnns hand the Lady Chaps their only loss of the season. Led by first-year head coach Mark Cumpian, the TexAnns are hitting .320 as a team led by freshman Maddie Quintanar at a .472 clip. The Tarleton pitching staff is third in the Lone Star Conference with a 2.31 team ERA, led by reigning first-team All-LSC selection Haley Freyman with a 1.74 earned run average.
 
ABOUT THE LIONS
Texas A&M-Commerce is off to an 8-2 record in its third season of existence. The Lions, who started softball in 2015, are hitting .322 this season, led by Ciera Nunez at a .524 clip in nine games which ranks her No. 2 in the Lone Star Conference. The Commerce pitching staff boasts a 3.36 ERA in 10 games this season.
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
The TexAnns and Lions have squared off nine times since Commerce started its program in 2015 and Tarleton has four wins, including one in the LSC Tournament Quarterfinals in 2015. Tarleton is 2-2 all-time against Commerce in Stephenville.
 
UP NEXT FOR TARLETON
The TexAnns will take a two-game hiatus Monday afternoon when Tarleton heads to Laredo for a doubleheader at 12 p.m. against the Dustdevils.
