Stech, Durante combine for eight hits, seven RBI in series win over ENMU

PORTALES, NM – The Tarleton offense picked up right where it left off yesterday with an 11-3 thumping of Eastern New Mexico to give Mark Cumpian his first Lone Star Conference series win as the head coach.

"I'm very proud of the way we played solid defense today," said Cumpian. "Our pitchers really threw some quality pitches to help us win this series. Our hitters did a great job of barreling up the ball all weekend. Now we have to continue that as we get set for a very tough stretch against quality opponents."

The teams traded goose eggs over the first two innings before Tarleton broke through with a two spot in the top of the third on back-to-back RBI singles from Stech and Durante to kick start their career afternoons. Both hitters would go on to record a 4-for-5 afternoon while Stech scored three times and drove in a pair of RBI while Durante drove in a career high five RBI.

Meanwhile, Jordan Withrow continued her hot start to her Lone Star Conference career as the freshman from Trenton kept the Greyhounds off the board for the first three innings.

Her offense pulled away in the top of the fourth with four runs on a Nyka Wood RBI single, a run scoring passed ball, and a 2-RBI double from Durante for a 6-0 Tarleton advantage. Eastern New Mexico got into the run column in the ensuing half inning with one on an RBI single to make it a 6-1 game.

After a scoreless fifth, Tarleton kept the offense rolling with another two-run double from Durante and an RBI single from Maddie Quintanar for a 9-1 lead.

Eastern New Mexico delayed the inevitable with two in the sixth to give the TexAnns one more trip to the plate. Tarleton tacked on two more with RBI singles from Stech and Kadyn Kirkpatrick to bring the game to its final score. Haley Freyman, who earned a save by pitching three innings of relief, sat the Greyhounds down in order in the bottom of the seventh to deliver the win.

Behind the combined eight hits from Stech and Durante, Alyssa Ringhausen went 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Wood, Quintanar, Avery Mullendore, and Kadyn Kirkpatrick had one hit each to round out the 14-hit attack for Tarleton.

The TexAnns will return home this week for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader against No. 3 St. Mary's in Stephenville at 4 p.m.
