LAWTON, Okla. – Tarleton dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader to open a Lone Star Conference series at Cameron.
Game 1: Cameron 8, Tarleton 1
Cameron scored two runs in each of the first four innings to pull away from Tarleton in the series opener Friday afternoon.
Tarleton scored first when
Avery Mullendore,
Nyka Wood, and
Savannah Stech loaded the bases with by reaching on an error, getting hit by a pitch, and singling to second base, respectively.
Kadyn Kirkpatrick drove in the game's first run with an RBI groundout.
The Aggies answered with two runs over each of the first four innings while Tarleton couldn't push any more runs across on four hits, including a 2-for-4 day by
Meghann Wrinkle. Stech and
Marisa Flores each had one hit for the game to round out the Tarleton offense.
Haley Freyman threw the first three innings and took the loss before
Kayleigh Williams came in to throw the final three innings, over which she allowed one run on one hit and a walk while striking out two.
Game 2: Cameron 4, Tarleton 3
A seventh-inning rally fell just short as Tarleton dropped the second game of the doubleheader to Cameron Friday.
Cameron carried its momentum from game one into the first inning by putting up a three spot in the opening frame before
Jordan Withrow settled in and allowed just one more run over the next five innings. Withrow tossed her third complete game of the season and struck out a career high 11.
The offense chipped into the lead when
Maddie Quintanar reached on an error and
Avery Mullendore made the Aggies pay with a two-out, RBI double to left center to bring the freshman home for the first Tarleton run of the game.
Cameron answered with a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 4-1. Withrow struck out the next hitter looking to get out of the jam with no further damage.
Tarleton went into the last inning trailing by three and got a one-out spark from Wrinkle with a single and a stolen base. The junior outfielder came in to score on an RBI double by
Nyka Wood to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. An error and a walk loaded the bases for Tarleton with one away, but two looking strikeouts – with an RBI walk in between – put a halt to the Tarleton rally at 4-3.
Wood led the offense with a 2-for-4 game while Quintanar, Wrinkle, Mullendore,
Alyssa Ringhausen,
Marisa Flores,
Megan Durante, and
Kadyn Kirkpatrick each had one base hit in the game.
Tarleton and Cameron will look to wrap up the series with a 12 p.m. game tomorrow in Lawton.
