THE GAMES
Tarleton will continue its run of seven consecutive nationally ranked opponents when the TexAnns welcome No. 6 West Texas A&M to Stephenville for the first time since 2012 this weekend for a three-game series. The first game of the series is set for 7 p.m. Friday night before the series wraps up with an 11 a.m. doubleheader Saturday.
SCHEDULE ALTERATIONS
Saturday's doubleheader was originally scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m. but inclement weather led to a precautionary change in the game times. The two games will now be played at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE TEAMS
Tarleton comes into the game fresh off a walk-off win against No. 3 St. Mary's Tuesday night that moved the TexAnns to a 12-9 record overall. It was the first win over a ranked opponent for first-year head coach
Mark Cumpian. Meanwhile, West Texas A&M comes to town ranked No. 6 in the nation by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association with a record of 17-2, 3-0. Both teams are ranked in the top three in the LSC in hitting and pitching as the TexAnns are No. 3 in batting average (.338) and earned run average (2.53) while the Lady Buffs lead the league in hitting at .403 and are No. 2 in ERA at 2.23.
MILESTONE WATCH: NYKA WOOD
Just 21 games into her junior season,
Nyka Wood is already enjoying one of the finest careers in the history of TexAnn Softball. Wood has moved into the No. 3 spot all-time in career RBIs with 128, including 27 already this season. She is one RBI away from tying Alicia Petersma (129) from second place all-time and 22 RBI away from passing Arianna Rodriguez (149) for the all-time lead.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Tarleton and West Texas A&M have record 35 chapters into their all-time history, which started when West Texas A&M added softball for the 2006 season – 10 years after Tarleton's inaugural campaign. The TexAnns trail the all-time series to WT 16-19 with their last win coming in the 2015 NCAA region tournament in Canyon where Tarleton defeated top-seeded WT 2-1 in the opening game. Tarleton is 9-4 all-time against the Lady Buffs in Stephenville, having swept West Texas A&M the last time WT made the trip in 2012 as the No. 2 team in the country.
UP NEXT FOR TARLETON
Tarleton will wrap up its run of seven straight games against a ranked opponent Tuesday with a home doubleheader against No. 22 Lubbock Christian at 3 p.m. in Stephenville.
