Record-setting offensive showcase leads TexAnns to doubleheader sweep of Mustangs

SILVER CITY, NM – Offensive records fell like Ancient Rome Friday afternoon as Tarleton pounded out 36 runs in 10 innings, including a school record 25 runs in the second game led by a Lone Star Conference record nine RBI from Marisa Flores, to sweep Western New Mexico in a doubleheader.

"We did a great job of keeping things simple today," said head coach Mark Cumpian. "Our hitters barreled up the ball all day and our pitchers did a great job of throwing quality pitches. Now we need to stay focused as we look to sweep the series tomorrow."

Game 1: Tarleton 11, Western New Mexico 2

A three-run home run by Wood in the first inning set the tone for a dominant afternoon by the TexAnns, who won their third straight, early inning game with an 11-2 shellacking of the Mustangs.

Maddie Quintanar and Meghann Wrinkle set the table with a walk and an infield single, respectively, before Wood cashed in with a long ball to left center field for a 3-0 lead and three of her five RBI in the opening game. Wood finished the game 2-for-2 with five RBI, two runs scored and a walk.

She wasted little time getting her fourth and fifth RBI of the game as she laced a two-run single into center field in the bottom of the second to bring home Avery Mullendore and Wrinkle, who each singled to start the inning. After a walk and a passed ball allowed Wood and Savannah Stech to move to third with two away, Kadyn Kirkpatrick singled to right field for two more runs and a 7-0 Tarleton lead.

Western New Mexico scored one in the first and one in the third to pull within 7-2, but the TexAnns opened up the flood gates with one in the fourth and three in the fifth to bring the game to an early stop. Megan Durante homered to lead off the fourth and coaxed a bases-loaded walk in the fifth before a throwing error with the bases juiced let the final runs come across.

Wood wasn't the only TexAnn with a multi-hit performance as Wrinkle led the way with a 3-for-4 day with three runs scored out of the No. 2 spot in the TexAnn lineup. Kirkpatrick and Mullendore also had two hits each, while Durante rounded out the 10-hit attack with her fourth-inning home run.

Haley Freyman earned her 57th career victory with a complete game performance, over which she allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out three.

Game 2: Tarleton 25, Western New Mexico 1

Tarleton picked up right where it left off in game one as the TexAnns set a new single-game scoring record and Marisa Flores tied the school and Lone Star Conference record for RBI in a single game as the junior ignited a record-setting win.

Flores' nine RBI in the game tied Monica Garza's efforts against UC-Colorado Springs on Feb. 8, 2004 for the school and Lone Star Conference record. Flores and Garza are now in a three-way tie for the conference record with Eastern New Mexico's Courtney McClasky in 2006.

The TexAnns also tied their own single-game hits record for the second time this season, matching their previous high with 21 base hits Friday.

Tarleton's big first inning came with two away as Wrinkle singled with one out and stole second before the TexAnns took advantage of a Mustang throwing error and a walk to load the bases with two away.

Kirkpatrick plated the first run of the game when the freshman took a hit by pitch to bring home Wrinkle and Marisa Flores followed up with a much bigger hit when the junior second baseman unloaded the bases with a three-run double down the left field line for a 4-0 Tarleton lead.

Kaitlyn Thomas drove Flores home with an RBI triple and Avery Mullendore returned the favor by letting Thomas come across easy with a double to center field for a 6-0 TexAnn lead. Another error allowed Mullendore to come across and extend the lead to seven after the opening frame.

Tarleton continued to take advantage of miscues as the TexAnns scored five more in the second inning on three unearned runs and a two-RBI double by Mullendore. The offense continued to roll with another five spot in the third – all on big RBI hits.

Marisa Flores drove in two more with a two-run double and then came in to score on Thomas' second RBI triple of the game. Thomas became the fifth player in school history with two triples in a single game and the first since Melody Mayse against Oklahoma Panhandle State in 2013.

Mullendore followed up with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 17-0 after the top of the third.

Errors continued to allow the Tarleton offense to pile it on as the TexAnns plated eight runs with two outs.

Tarleton hit its way to three more runs with two away when a single from Durante, a double from Kirkpatrick, and a three-run jack by Flores got the scoring started. After a single from Thomas, an error kept the inning alive and allowed the fourth run of the inning to come across. Mikayla Stogsdill drove in the fifth run with an RBI single and Nyka Wood plated two more on an RBI single and an error to tie the school record for runs at 24.

Robyn Gajdica put the TexAnns into the record books with a pinch-hit RBI double into right center for the 25th run of the game.

Flores led the way with a 4-for-4 game, scoring four runs and driving in 9, while Thomas went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBI. Avery Mullendore also had a four-hit performance to go along with her first career home run and five RBI.

Quintanar, Wrinkle, Wood, Stogsdill, Gajdica, Durante (2), Kirkpatrick (2), and Kayleigh Williams rounded out Tarleton's 21-hit attack, which ties their school record.

Meanwhile, Jordan Withrow continued to do her thing from the pitching circle as the freshman from Trenton tossed the complete game win, allowing one run and striking out seven.

The teams will return to action tomorrow at 12 p.m. CST for the final two games of the series.
