AUSTIN – St. Edward's couldn't get anything going against
Haley Freyman and
Jordan Withrow Tuesday afternoon as the TexAnn pitchers led Tarleton to its eighth straight win with a doubleheader sweep of the Hilltoppers.
"I was proud of the way we fought today," said head coach
Mark Cumpian. "It was hard to manufacture runs with the wind blowing in, but we were able to come up with a few key hits to win. Our pitchers were outstanding. Now we need to get focused on a big showdown with a very good Angelo State team."
Game 1: Tarleton 2, St. Edward's 1
After a first-inning run by St. Edward's,
Haley Freyman was nearly unhittable over the final six innings as the Tarleton junior got enough run support to earn her 12
th win of the season and the 58
th of her TexAnn career. Freyman is now two wins away from joining Hall of Famer Carla Geeslin as the only TexAnns in school history with at least 60 pitching wins.
An RBI single by the Hilltoppers in the first put Tarleton in a 1-0 hole, which carried into the fourth inning. In the fourth,
Megan Durante kept the inning alive with a two-out walk before
Kadyn Kirkpatrick cashed in with her first career triple to bring home the tying run.
Freyman sat the Hilltoppers down in order in the bottom of the fourth and then the Tarleton offense supplied the go-ahead run in the fifth when
Maddie Quintanar scored on a two-out error that kept the inning alive. Freyman allowed a single in the fifth and another in the sixth, but St. Edward's could do nothing with them as Freyman cruised to the complete game win.
Tarleton got four hits in the game – one each from Quintanar, Kirkpatrick,
Marisa Flores, and
Mikayla Stogsdill.
Game 2: Tarleton 2, St. Edward's 0
Jordan Withrow tossed her second complete game shutout of the season to secure a sweep of the Hilltoppers and extend Tarleton's winning streak to eight.
The offense gave Withrow a two-run lead right off the bat when Quintanar singled and stole second to lead off the game. After the freshman outfielder moved to third on a wild pitch,
Nyka Wood reached on a fielder's choice when St. Edward's decided to keep Quintanar at third instead of making a play on Wood at first to set up runners on the corners with one away.
Savannah Stech drove Quintanar in with an RBI grounder to second for a 1-0 advantage before Durante cashed in the second run with an RBI single into right field to bring home Wood from second base for a two-run lead.
Withrow had to do some dancing over the first three innings, but a fly ball double play in the first erased a leadoff single before Withrow escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second and a second-and-third situation in the third to keep the Hilltoppers off the board.
The freshman continued to deal with flawless innings in the fourth and sixth while stranding two more runners to escape the fifth with no damage. In the final frame, Withrow put the exclamation point on the shutout with a pop up to first and back-to-back strikeouts.
For the game, Withrow allowed no runs on three hits and five walks while striking out six. At the plate, Durante extended her team high eight-game hit streak with a two-hit performance while Stech, Flores, and Stogsdill each had one hit.
Tarleton will head home this weekend to host No. 1 Angelo State in a three-game Lone Star Conference series, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
