STEPHENVILLE – After falling behind over the first four innings, Tarleton put together a furious four-run rally to tie things up before a solo home run in the sixth was the difference in a 5-4 loss for the TexAnns Sunday afternoon.
Tarleton won the series with wins on Friday and Saturday to mark the first series win over the Lady Buffs since the TexAnns swept then-No. 2 West Texas A&M in Stephenville.
The Lady Buffs jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the first four innings with one in the first, two in the third, and one more in the fourth, but the TexAnns answered with a four spot in the bottom of the fifth – starting with a one-out single from
Meghann Wrinkle.
Maddie Quintanar and
Alyssa Ringhausen followed up with singles of their own to load the bases before
Nyka Wood unloaded them with a two-RBI double down the left field line.
Savannah Stech followed up with an RBI fielder's choice to bring home
Avery Mullendore, who reentered the game for Ringhausen, before
Kadyn Kirkpatrick capped off the inning by bringing home Wood's pinch runner,
Morgan Ling, on an RBI single into right.
West Texas A&M went on top for good with a solo home run with two outs in the sixth inning.
Kayleigh Williams got the start and went the first two innings, allowing two runs – one earned – on two walks and three strikeouts before giving way to
Jordan Withrow out of the pen. Withrow took the loss with four innings of relief, over which she allowed three runs – two earned – on three hits and struck out two.
Haley Freyman worked a scoreless seventh.
Tarleton's offense provided nine hits on the afternoon, led by a pair of two-hit performances from Wood and Wrinkle. Quintanar, Ringhausen, Kirkpatrick,
Megan Durante, and
Marisa Flores each had one hit to round out the afternoon.
Tarleton will return to action for more action against nationally ranked opponents as the TexAnns welcome No. 22 Lubbock Christian to town for a 3 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday.
