LUBBOCK –
Mark Cumpian is batting 1.000 in 30-win seasons as the head coach of Tarleton Softball after an extra-inning RBI from
Savannah Stech pushed across the final run in a 2-1 TexAnn win to split Tuesday's doubleheader and secure the TexAnns' 30
th win of the year.
"I am very proud of how we fought today," said head coach
Mark Cumpian. "It wasn't pretty at times, but we found a way to get one (win), which puts us in a good position moving forward. Being able to go 4-1 against a very good Lubbock Christian team speaks volumes of the team we have."
Game 1: Lubbock Christian 4, Tarleton 0
A rocky first inning of action proved to be too much for Tarleton to overcome as Lubbock Christian won a 4-0 shutout of Tarleton to take the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
The Lady Chaps got on the board with an RBI double and a three-run home run to take a 4-0 lead in the opening frame. That would be all that Tarleton starter
Haley Freyman would allow as the right-hander blanked LCU over the final five innings, allowing just five hits for the game and striking out four.
Meanwhile, the TexAnn offense couldn't get any runs across despite having runners on base in every inning. Tarleton stranded 11 baserunners for the game.
Stech went 3-for-4 in the game while
Meghann Wrinkle,
Nyka Wood,
Megan Durante,
Marisa Flores,
Mikayla Stogsdill, and
Avery Mullendore each had one hit to round out the nine-hit Tarleton attack. Stogsdill's hit went for two bases.
Game 2: Tarleton 2, Lubbock Christian 1 (8)
In the second game, the pitching combination of
Kayleigh Williams and Freyman kept the Lubbock Christian offense in check long enough for the offense to supply enough runs for the win.
Kayleigh Williams was in complete control over the first four innings, posting consecutive shutout frames before the Lady Chaps scored once in the fifth on an RBI single to left. The senior worked out of the fifth-inning jam with a groundout and a pop up. Williams got one more out in the sixth before giving way to Freyman, who pitched the final 2.2 innings to earn her 15
th win of the season.
It was also Freyman's 61
st win of her career, which puts her one win shy of the school's all-time record of 62 by 2017 Hall of Fame Inductee Carla Geeslin.
Meanwhile, Stech took care of the offense in the eighth inning when the senior plated
Maddie Quintanar with an RBI fielder's choice for a 2-1 lead.
After a runner was placed at second base due to non-conference extra inning rules and a stolen base, Freyman was forced to work around a runner on third with no outs. Freyman got a groundout to shortstop and Mullendore cut down the runner at the plate to save the lead before a flyout and a grounder ended the game.
Tarleton had one hit each from Wood,
Megan Durante, Flores, and
Kaitlyn Thomas.
The TexAnns will return home this weekend for their final home series of the season with a three-game series against Midwestern State, beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
