KINGSVILLE – Numbers tell the story in a volleyball match.
For example, when Tarleton scored 75 points in three sets Tuesday night, the numbers equal a 21-match winning streak. Other numbers indicate that the TexAnns did so in dominant fashion, such as their .442 hitting percentage – which happens to be the sixth-highest for a single match in program history – and the .139 hit percentage by Kingsville.
But the most important number from Tuesday night's win is one.
Tarleton needs one more conference victory to secure a share of the Lone Star Conference Championship and the right to host the LSC Championship Tournament for the second consecutive season. The outright championship can be had with two wins over the final four matches.
In the opening set, Tarleton came out swinging to the tune of a 17-7 run over the opening 24 points to building a double-digit lead. After Kingsville pulled within five at 18-13,
Lauren Kersey – who wears No. 11 for the No. 11 team in the nation, landed her third kill of the night to start a 7-3 Tarleton run to clinch the opening set.
Kingsville built a slim 5-4 lead over the opening nine points of the second set, but it was short-lived as Tarleton's
Amber Strange – who wears No. 15 – started and ended a 15-4 Tarleton run with kills as the TexAnns built a 19-9 lead. The teams traded six points each down the stretch with
Adriana Darthuy closing things out with a kill at 25-15.
The third set started with the Javelinas taking three of the first four points, but Darthuy – who dons the No. 6 – landed a kill and then served up four straight points to give Tarleton six points in the set and a 6-4 lead. Tarleton never looked back as Darthuy's kill was the catalyst for a 14-5 run to give the TexAnns a 15-8 lead. The teams traded 10 points teach over the rest of the match as Tarleton claimed the match via sweep.
Tarleton boasted six different players with at least a .400 hit percentage for the match – Strange (.571),
Tatyana Tuialii-Umi (.545),
Carmen Kinsey (.500),
Lauren Kersey (.462),
Hannah McManus (.417), and Darthuy (.412). Darthuy led the team with 10 kills while Strange (9) and Tuialii-Umi (7) combined for 16.
Kayla Brannon led the team with 19 assists off the bench while
Blanca Izquierdo dished out 18. The front row combination of McManus (6), Kersey (5), and
Sofia Tonga (4) combined for 15 assisted blocks on the night while
Adrianna Knutson led the team with 11 digs – cutting her personal magic number to 24, which is the number of digs Knutson needs to pass Shea McBrearty for the all-time lead in that statistical category in TexAnn Volleyball history.
Tarleton will look to claim the third LSC regular season championship in program history in front of the home faithful this weekend when the TexAnns host MSU Texas on Friday at 6 p.m. and Cameron Saturday at 1 p.m. Friday will be Polynesian Night in Wisdom Gym and there will be 200 free purple and white leis given away to fans. Saturday will be Senior Day as the TexAnns will recognize
Elizabeth Muliaga, Izquierdo, McManus, and Knutson for their accomplishments with the program.
