No. 17 Tarleton sweeps Western New Mexico to tie school record with 15th straight win

STEPHENVILLE – No. 17 Tarleton tied a school record with its 15th straight win with a sweep of Western New Mexico (25-20, 25-13, 25-18) on Saturday in the Wisdom Volleyball Gym.

The win matches last year's streak of 15 consecutive wins. During the streak, the TexAnns have swept 10 matches including eight straight. The last two times Tarleton has recorded double-digit win streaks in a season, they went on to win the Lone Star Conference championship (2015, 2017).

Tarleton (18-2, 10-0) hit .321 in the match and held Western New Mexico (7-12, 3-7) to a .116 clip. Amber Strange led the TexAnns with 11 kills, while Blanca Izquierdo recorded a match-high 20 assists and also added four aces. Defensively, Sofia Tonga led all players with six blocks and Adrianna Knutson led with six digs.

Tarleton and Western New Mexico went back and forth in the opening set, splitting the first 30 points. With the score tied at 17, Strange delivered a kill to regain the lead. Adriana followed with another kill and Izquierdo's service ace gave the TexAnns their largest lead of the set at 24-19. Lauren Kersey recorded the final point with a kill to win the set.

The second set was close early on as the TexAnns held a slim 10-9 lead. An 8-0 run was all the momentum the TexAnns needed to put the second set away. Elizabeth Muliaga and Hannah McManus each had a kill and a block during the run. The lead grew to double digits at 20-10 on a kill from Strange and Tarleton would close the set on a 4-1 run behind three Mustang errors.

For the third straight set, Tarleton led 10-9 to open things up. It was at the point again where the TexAnns regrouped and pulled ahead. This time it was a 7-2 push for a 17-11 lead. Tarleton never let the Mustangs back to within five points the rest of the set en route to a sweep.

Tarleton will travel to No. 21 Texas A&M-Commerce to start the second half of LSC play with a top-20 matchup on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
