STEPHENVILLE – Behind two three-run home runs and two more complete games from
Jordan Withrow, Tarleton evened its Lone Star Conference record by sweeping Eastern New Mexico Monday afternoon.
Game 1: Tarleton 7, Eastern New Mexico 3
Picking right up where she left off with her complete game last night,
Jordan Withrow fired the first of her two complete games on the day while a three-run home run by
Megan Durante sparked the Tarleton offense to a 7-3 win.
The Greyhounds got to Withrow for a two spot in the opening frame, but Durante answered right back in the home half of the first with a three-run big fly to left center to put the TexAnns on top 3-2.
Tarleton tacked on solo runs over the next three innings with an unearned run on a Greyhound miscue, a
Georgia Capell solo home run, and an RBI groundout from
Meghann Wrinkle in the fourth to put the TexAnns up 6-2. Eastern added one in the fifth but Tarleton had an answer for that in the sixth when
Elizabeth Svienty drove home
Lexi Grimaldo with an RBI double.
Meanwhile, Withrow continued to deal.
The sophomore allowed three runs – two earned – on four hits and two walks while striking out 12 to improve her record to 7-2 for the season.
Offensively, Tarleton pounded out 10 hits, led by two each from Durante, Svienty and Capell.
Kaitlyn Thomas,
Nyka Wood, Grimaldo and
Marisa Flores added one hit each for Tarleton.
Game 2: Tarleton 5, Eastern New Mexico 2
Withrow polished off her full weekend with a third straight complete-game victory while a three-run jack from
Tanna Huie was the big blow in a 5-2 Tarleton win.
Megan Durante got things started with an RBI double in the first inning to provide a 1-0 advantage. After a scoreless second, Tarleton put up a four spot in the third to pull away at 5-0.
Kaitlyn Thomas started off the big inning with a walk and a steal before coming around to score on an RBI single from
Meghann Wrinkle. After a single from Wood and a fielder's choice, Huie went deep to right field to cap off the four-run inning for Tarleton.
Meanwhile, a two-run home run in the fifth was the only sign of life Eastern New Mexico could get against Withrow. The sophomore from Trenton completed the final game of the series allowing three hits and striking out six.
For the weekend, Withrow threw all 21 innings and went 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA while striking out 28 batters. The Greyhounds managed only a .147 batting average off Withrow for the weekend.
Tarleton was originally scheduled to play St. Mary's in Stephenville tomorrow, but rain in the forecast has postponed that series until March 20. The TexAnns will return to action this weekend in Canyon against West Texas A&M.
