Withrow’s near perfecto, Crumpley’s walk-off send TexAnns to sweep of St. Mary’s

STEPHENVILLE – Jordan Withrow carried a perfect game to the game's final out in a shutout victory in game one before Tarleton walked it off on an RBI single from Destiny Crumpley to push its winning streak to seven Tuesday afternoon.

It's the first season sweep of St. Mary's for the TexAnns since 2009 after the TexAnns won the season's earlier meeting in San Antonio.

"I say it a lot because I mean it, but I am just so proud of this team," said head coach Mark Cumpian. "The way they compete and battle through every single pitch is incredible. They came out today with great focus and earned two wins against a very good team.

"Jordan was incredible in game one," he continued. "I think every person watching knew what was happening and wanted her to finish it off, but it's still one of the best performances of her career and I'm excited to watch her continue to develop. It was also a great performance behind the plate from Nyka (Wood) and the defense that backed her up."

Game 1: Tarleton 4, St. Mary's 0

Jordan Withrow had herself a historic kind of outing as the sophomore right-hander was just one strike away from the first seven-inning perfect game in program history before finishing with a one-hit shutout of the Rattlers in a 4-0 win Tuesday.

Withrow was dealing from the get-go Tuesday as she sat down every hitter in order through the first six innings and two outs of the seventh before a two-out, two-strike single up the middle from the Rattlers' leading hitter extended the game by one hitter. Withrow quickly disposed of the game's final hitter to put a cap on her one-hit shutout victory.

The only perfect game in program history was a five-inning game thrown by Caryn Holbrook against Eastern New Mexico on March 29, 1997 in a five-inning, 14-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico.

While Withrow was carving up the Rattlers from the circle, her offense was providing more than enough support.

Tarleton pushed its first run across in the second when Karli Herron lined an RBI single off the pitcher to bring home Megan Durante for a 1-0 lead. Tarleton added two more in the fourth on an RBI from Marisa Flores and a sacrifice fly from Elizabeth Svienty for a 3-0 lead. Svienty added another sacrifice fly in the sixth to plate Tanna Huie for the game's final run.

Huie led the way at the plate with a 3-3 day to go along with two runs scored while Flores and Herron boasted two hits each. Durante and Maddie Quintanar had one hit each to round out the nine-hit effort for the TexAnns.

Game 2: Tarleton 4, St. Mary's 3

Destiny Crumpley delivered a walk-off RBI single while Georgia Capell slid under the game-deciding tag at home plate to send Tarleton to a doubleheader sweep and a season sweep of St. Mary's Tuesday afternoon.

The first run of the game came across on a milestone swing of the bat for senior Nyka Wood.

Wood, who already holds the school's all-time RBI record, set another program record with an RBI double to bring home Georgia Capell for a 1-0 lead in the opening frame. It was Wood's 50th career two-bagger, passing Alicia Petersma (49) for the program record.

St. Mary's answered every Tarleton run over the first three and a half innings.

The Rattlers scored one in the second and two in the fourth while the TexAnns scored two in the third on a pair of Rattler errors to bring the score to 3-3 after four. The teams put up goose eggs in the fifth and sixth to send the game into the seventh all tied up.

Capell led off the inning with a double to the right-center gap and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Meghann Wrinkle to set up Crumpley with one away. The sophomore from Little Elm delivered with the RBI single into left, which came across on a bang-bang play at the plate between Capell and the Rattler catcher.

Capell and Wood led the offense with two hits each while Wrinkle and Crumpley had one each for Tarleton.

Withrow got the start and threw the first four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Megan Rosewell threw the final three innings to earn her seventh win of the season. Rosewell did not allow a hit in her relief appearance.

Tarleton will have a quick turnaround as the TexAnns host Friends University (Ks.) for a single 3 p.m. game tomorrow in Stephenville.
