SAN ANGELO – No. 15 Tarleton is moving on to the Lone Star Conference semifinals after opening the tournament with a 3-0 win over fifth-seeded Cameron.
Not only is it the third straight shutout posted by the TexAnns, it's the fifth postseason shutout in program history and the first since May 2, 2003.
The TexAnns will take on No. 1 seed Angelo State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. for a spot in the LSC Tournament Championship. The TexAnns have had success against the No. 6-ranked Rambelles, having won two out of three in San Angelo back in March. Tarleton is the only team this season to win a series at Angelo State.
"I'm proud of the girls and the way they came out and attacked early," said head coach
Mark Cumpian. "We were able to score a few runs early on and let our pitching and defense carry us the rest of the game. It's tournament time and every game will be tough, so we have to continue to battle and compete."
Tarleton plated a pair of runs in the first inning to get the game started.
Georgia Capell led the inning off with a double followed by an infield single from
Meghann Wrinkle.
Megan Durante drove home Capell for the game's first run on a bloop single to left field.
Tanna Huie added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Jordan Withrow started in the circle for the TexAnns and the LSC Co-Pitcher of the Year delivered with her 24
th complete game and sixth shutout of the season. Withrow (24-5) allowed just three hits – all singles – and struck out seven with just two walks.
The sophomore faced a slight jam in the fourth inning, when Cameron had two on and nobody out. But Withrow retired the next three Aggies on a strike out and two groundouts. No Cameron player advanced past first base after that.
The 1-4 hitters in the TexAnn lineup combined for eight of the team's 10 hits and it was Capell and Wrinkle representing the top half of the order again in the sixth inning to provide an insurance run. Capell ripped her second double of the game and Wrinkle followed with a 2-out triple to left center to bring home Capell for a 3-0 lead.
Capell went 3-for-3 in the game with two runs and a walk. Wrinkle and
Nyka Wood each went 2-for-4 while Durante, Huie, and
Elizabeth Svienty all had one hit.
