OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Weather took a toll on Tarleton Softball's originally-scheduled big weekend but Tarleton was able to get in one of the two games Monday night at Tom Heath Field in Oklahoma. Tarleton defeated Colorado Christian 7-4 for its ninth consecutive win.
Elizabeth Svienty got the night going with a leadoff single and
Georgia Capell followed up with a double to set up the Tarleton offense right off the bat.
Tanna Huie plated the first run with a fielder's choice that turned into a two-base error that kept things rolling.
Destiny Crumpley doubled the lead at 2-0 with a sacrifice fly and, two batters later,
Amanda Conner plated the third run of the inning by reaching on another Colorado Christian error.
Two batter later,
Kadyn Kirkpatrick made the Cougars pay for the miscues with a two-out, two-run triple to left center to cap off a five-run first inning.
After Colorado Christian put up a two spot in their half of the first, Tarleton extended its lead to 6-2 on another run-producing Cougar error in the top of the third.
Karli Herron, who led off the inning by wearing a pitch, came around to score on a throwing error during
Morgan Ling's at bat.
Capell led off the top of the fourth with her third extra-base hit of the game when the sophomore All-American went yard to deep right center for a 7-2 lead.
The Cougars clawed back with one in the fourth and one in the sixth to pull within three heading into the seventh. After Tarleton made two quick outs, Svienty drew a walk but that would be it for the ballgame as lightning moved into the area and the game was called final.
The second scheduled game against Oklahoma Christian was cancelled.
Tarleton's offense pounded out eight hits in the game, led by three from Capell to go along with an RBI and two runs scored. Svienty, Crumpley, Conner, Kirkpatrick, and
Lexi Grimaldo had one hit each to round out the offense.
Julia Wernet earned the win in relief as the sophomore right-hander twirled the final three innings of work, over which she allowed one run on three hits. She came on in relief of
Tristan Bridges, who allowed three runs over the first three innings.
Tarleton will head to Lawton, Oklahoma this weekend to begin Lone Star Conference play with a three-game series against Cameron.
