ARLINGTON – It took a few extra days for the season to get started, but the Tarleton Tennis team was ready as the TexAnns swept UT-Tyler at the Arlington Tennis Center Thursday morning.
The morning match began with doubles, which was the first under the new rules in NCAA Division II.
This season, NCAA Division II has adopted the Division I rule for doubles competition which counts doubles as one point. Whichever team can win two of three doubles matches will earn one point heading into singles. The final score will now favor the team who reaches seven team points, instead of nine.
UT-Tyler came out swinging and took the opening doubles point, but
Alicia Barbaroux and
Sherine Salem answered back with a 6-4 win in the top-seeded doubles match to even things up.
Nathalie Ulander and
Faustine Palatte edged out the No. 2 match to send things into singles play with Tarleton leading 1-0.
The TexAnns wasted little time in securing the win as Tarleton swept singles, including a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win by Palatte in her collegiate debut. The No. 47-ranked singles player in the nation and defending LSC Player of the Year,
Alicia Barbaroux, earned her first singles win of the year with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 1 match.
