No. 21 Tarleton takes two from Texas A&M International Tuesday

STEPHENVILLE – Tuesday was Tarleton's annual Day of Giving and the softball team gave the fans in left field plenty of souvenirs and Texas A&M International a pair of losses in a doubleheader sweep.

Game 1: No. 21 Tarleton 11, Texas A&M International 3 (6)

Tarleton belted four home runs, including a three-run walk-off blast from Tanna Huie, to take the opening game of the twin bill 11-3 in six innings.

After the Dustdevils struck first with a two-run home run in the opening inning, Destiny Crumpley started Tarleton's offensive pursuit with an RBI double into the left center gap to cut the deficit in half.

In the next half inning, Lexi Grimaldo tied the game with her first home run of the season.

Tarleton continued to pour it on with back-to-back RBI doubles from Georgia Capell and Huie for a 4-2 lead. Two innings later, Karli Herron and Amanda Conner took advantage of a two-out error by teeing off for back-to-back home runs for three more runs and an 8-2 lead.

The Dustdevils scratched back for one in the sixth and then Huie ended it early with an opposite-field, three-run homer to end the game in the sixth.

Huie and Capell paced the offense with two hits each while Elizabeth Svienty, Crumpley, Herron, Conner and Grimaldo had one hit each. Jordan Withrow earned her 16th win of the season with a complete game.

Game 2: No. 21 Tarleton 11, Texas A&M International 2 (6)

Tarleton pounded out 11 runs on 12 hits, including three more home runs, to complete the sweep of Texas A&M International.

Tarleton got the scoring started in the second game when Huie tripled home Capell for a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

After International answered back with two in the second to take a 2-1 lead, Tarleton started scoring in the third and never looked back. Tarleton had an RBI cycle in the third to extend their lead out to 5-2. Capell homered, Karli Herron had an RBI triple, Amanda Conner had an RBI double, and Grimaldo drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single.

Tarleton continued to pack on the runs in the fifth when Crumpley singled and Kristen Zuehl tripled down the right field line. A throwing error from the outfield to third base allowed Zuehl to score and extend the lead out to 7-2.

The home runs continued to fly as Tanna Huie and Amanda Conner ended the game early once again by each hitting two-run home runs in the sixth inning to complete the sweep.

Huie and Conner each had two hits and three RBI while Capell added two hits of her own. Svienty, Crumpley, Herron, Zuehl, and Grimaldo had one hit each to round out the offense. Rachel Williams improved to 5-0 on the season with a complete-game victory in the circle.

Tarleton will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series on Thursday and Friday in Portales, New Mexico against Eastern New Mexico.
