WEEK AT A GLANCE: Texans to Battle Defending Champs on Heels of Hosting Record Crowd

Mission accomplished.

The Texans achieved their 15K Initiative by hosting a record crowd of 16,216 fans for their homecoming matchup against rival Midwestern State on Saturday. The record number of fans witnessed a classic, with Tarleton coming up on top 17-14 in a close game throughout.

Now, the Texans will host the defending champion Sam Houston Bearkats on Saturday. Tarleton volleyball has three matches this week, one at home on Tuesday, and two on the road, at North Texas on Thursday and at Abilene Christian on Saturday. The only other fall sport in action this week is cross country, who will participate in the WAC Championships on Saturday in Riverside, California.

DEFEATING THE CHAMPS will be on the Texans' minds on Saturday with a conference battle against last season's FCS football national champion Sam Houston Bearkats at Memorial Stadium at 6 p.m. CT. The Bearkats are an unblemished 6-0 this season after going 10-0 last year. In fact, the Bearkats have won 17 games in a row. The Texans will have their work cut out for them, but with another strong showing by their fan base at Memorial Stadium, that extra energy can make all of the difference. There was a record 16,216 fans at the homecoming game on Saturday, with multiple players saying postgame they could feel the vibes and it made for an awesome atmosphere. Tarleton is above .500 for the first time this season, winning the last two to get to 4-3. The Texans are allowing just 20.3 points per game and have only allowed an opponent to score more than 21 points once this year. Defensive back Devin Hafford has been the defensive MVP for the Texans so far this year, owning eight takeaways in seven games, the most takeaways across all of NCAA Division I football. He was just named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week after adding two interceptions to his total against the Mustangs. This Saturday will be Tarleton's "Pink Out Game," in which the team is partnering with Pink Warrior Angles to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer patients and their families. There will be 1,000 free "Pink Out" T-Shirts at the game, courtesy of Student Affairs.

TARLETON VOLLEYBALL will look to continue their great play of late, coming off of three wins in a four-match stretch, sweeping their last opponent Dixie State. Tarleton won the second set in the match 36-34, marking the highest scoring frame for the purple and white since 2012. The Texans are back to .500 on the year at 11-11. On Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT, the Texans return to Wisdom Gym to host Incarnate Word, a team they already beat on the road 3-1. It will be Tarleton's "Pink Out Game," with free "Pink Out" T-Shirts to the first 200 fans in the doors. Texan volleyball is partnering with the Pink Warrior Angels to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer patients and their families. On Thursday at 7 p.m. CT, Tarleton heads to Denton for a matchup with North Texas. On Saturday to wrap up the week, the Texans will head back to Abilene, where they just played two neutral opponents this past week. They'll face Abilene Christian at the Teague Special Events Center at 1 p.m. CT.

CROSS COUNTRY will participate in the WAC Championships on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT in Riverside, California. In Tarleton's last meet in College Station, five of the six women who toed the start line notched collegiate 6k personal records. Four of the five competitors Tarleton entered in the men's 8k race posted sub-26:00 times. The lone men's upperclassmen was Kevin Baez, the reigning WAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week. For the eighth time in as many meets, Baez was Tarleton's top performer. He finished 37th out of 263 runners in 24:26.90 to lead Tarleton to a 21st-place finish in a 37-team field.
