TEXAN TENNIS GAME DAY
After two weeks of bad weather forced the cancellation of four matches, Tarleton is set to resume play with two matches this week including the team's home opener Wednesday afternoon.
Tickets are required but Tarleton's 50-percent capacity plan will be enforced at the facility. All spectators will be required to wear a face covering at all times and maintain social distance when possible. The facility will close to the public when the 50-percent capacity is met.
QUICK HITS
- Tarleton comes into the match with a record of 2-5 with both of their wins coming in Edinburg on Jan. 30-31 against Lamar and UTRGV, respectively. The win against UTRGV lifted Tarleton to a 1-0 mark in conference play.
- Tarleton has won three straight Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards in weeks that they have competed. Celia Vaudiau, Rose Watanabe, Elsa Boisson and Martha Makantasi have all been recognized. Makantasi has won two singles awards this season.
NEW DIVISION WITH A BRIGHT FUTURE
- WELCOME TO THE WAC: After being a part of NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference since 1994, Tarleton Women's Tennis is on the move to the Western Athletic Conference and NCAA Division I.
- INCOMING RIVALS: The Western Athletic Conference is expanding in a big way as soon as July. The conference will be accepting four Texas schools – Abilene Christian, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, and Sam Houston State – this summer and Southern Utah next year.
NOTABLES
- With a 4-1 singles record, Martha Makantasi is the WAC leader in singles play. She is just ahead of GCU's Natasha Puehse (3-1).
- Tarleton has three doubles teams with two victories this season, which leads the WAC. GCU has two doubles pairings with two wins this season.
- Martha Makantasi is enjoying an incredible freshman campaign. Already having won two singles and one doubles WAC Player of the Week awards, Makantasi has won her last four singles matches dating back to the second match against Sam Houston State on Jan. 24 – all in the No. 3 flight.
- Jemi Aguilar is also in the middle of a hot streak. The Florida native has won three straight singles matches in the No. 2 flight dating back to the Lamar match on Jan. 30.
UP NEXT FOR TARLETON
Tarleton is scheduled for one road match next week. The Texans will visit Southwestern University in Georgetown on March 6 at 2 p.m.
