DENTON – Tarleton split the opening day of the North Texas Invitational as
Julia Wernet and three home runs lifted the Texans over Incarnate Word in game two.
Game 1: Stephen F. Austin 6, Tarleton 0
Despite five combined hits from
Katy Schaefer and
Kristen Zuehl, Tarleton couldn't push any runs across and suffered a 6-0 loss against Stephen F. Austin in the North Texas Invitational's first game.
The 'Jacks scored in the first, two in the third and pulled away with a three-run sixth inning while Tarleton managed just six singles from Schaefer (3), Zuehl (2) and
Morgan Medford.
Kallie Erwin through five innings for the Texans and gave way to
Tristan Bridges for the final two in the circle.
Game 2: Tarleton 5, Incarnate Word 1
Three home runs powered Tarleton to their third win of the season in the second game of the UNT Invitational as the Texans beat former Division II conference rival Incarnate Word 5-1 Friday night.
The Cardinals got on the board first against Texan starter
Julia Wernet with an RBI single in the second, but that is all they would get against the Tarleton right-hander. Wernet went the distance for her second straight pitching victory. She struck out a career-high 10 while not issuing a walk.
Tarleton's all-time home run leader
Georgia Capell blasted her first Division I long ball to turn the tide in Tarleton's favor. After
Hallie Saintignan kept the fourth inning alive with a two-out single, Capell ripped an opposite field home run to put Tarleton on top 2-1.
MacKenzie Peterson followed up in the next at bat with her career Texan round-tripper to extend the lead out to 3-1.
In Tarleton's next offensive frame, Schaefer joined in on the fun with her second four-bagger of the young season to complete the scoring for the purple and white.
Tarleton got one hit each from six different Texans – Capell, Peterson, Schaefer, Saintignan,
Morgan Medford and
Jordan Dickerson.
The Texans will return to action tomorrow with an 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. doubleheader rematch against Stephen F. Austin and Incarnate Word, respectively. Game times were altered due to inclement weather in the area.
