Texan Volleyball drops two in opening day at Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. – Tarleton suffered two losses in straight sets against the University of the Pacific and California Friday afternoon.
 
Match 1: Pacific 3, Tarleton 0
 
Despite a career performance from freshman Trinity Vinzant, Tarleton suffered a sweep against tournament-host Pacific in their tournament debut.
 
In the opening set, Tarleton held a lead of 19-17 before the Tigers finished the set on an 8-3 run. Pacific won the next two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-17.
 
Vinzant led the Texans with 12 kills on 24 swings with just one error for a .458 hitting percentage. Kayla Brannon was the top assist leader with 13 while Ana Costas had 11 digs and five assists.
 
Match 2: California 3, Tarleton 0
 
Despite a valiant comeback effort in set two, Tarleton suffered its second defeat of the afternoon with a straight-set loss to the Golden Bears of Cal.
 
After a 25-20 loss in the opener, Tarleton rallied back from a 13-7 deficit to ultimately tie things up as late as 19-19. However, another late surge lifted the opposition to victory with a 6-4 run for a 25-23 win. The Golden Bears won the final set of the day 25-12.
 
Kayla Brannon notched her first double-double of the year with 18 assists and 12 digs, which tied Costas for the team lead. Emma Halcomb also had double-digit digs with 10. Lauren Kersey was the team leader in kills with nine.
 
Tarleton will look to salvage a victory in Stockton tomorrow at 1 p.m. against UC San Diego.
