Tarleton dominates Seattle U for senior day sweep

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Tarleton Texan volleyball team wasted no time in dispatching Seattle U on senior day Saturday afternoon in Wisdom Gym. The Texans won the match in straight sets (25-14, 25-13, 25-20) in front of 555 rowdy fans.
 
Five seniors, Emma Halcomb, Brianna Rhodes, Ana Costas, Jaylibeth Garcia-Rosa and Haley Flanagan were honored prior to the start of the match.
 
Tarleton's (12-14, 4-7 WAC) defensive prowess was on full display as they held Seattle U (4-14, 0-10 WAC) to just .028 hitting in the match. The freshmen duo of Ailie Hair and Breanna McDonough totaled 10 blocks with Hair posting six and McDonough four.
 
The Texans won the first set by 11 points and the second set by 12. Megan Haynes led the way with 11 kills and McDonough added nine kills on .368 hitting. Megan Hodges finished with 21 assists and Ana Costas had 14 digs.
 
The Texans scored in bunches in the first set as they had four different runs of three or more consecutive points. Set two saw a 6-0 run followed later by a 4-0 run that was highlighted by two kills from Haynes and a Melina Maldonado service ace to up the lead to 23-11.
 
The Redhawks made things close in the third set, cutting Tarleton's deficit to one when Shanice Horn landed a kill to make it 10-9. Tarleton instantly reeled off five straight points to extend the lead to 15-9. Seattle U battled back to again cut the deficit to one at 19-18. Tarleton stood strong, with kills from Haynes, Garcia-Rosa and Grayson Schirpik followed by a Redhawk attack error to make it 23-18. The Texans ultimately prevailed 25-20.
 
Tarleton will take on Sam Houston in Huntsville at Johnson Coliseum on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
