Texans taken down by NM State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Tarleton volleyball team dropped a 3-0 contest (16-25, 16-25, 19-25) to New Mexico State on Thursday evening at the Pan American Center.

Tarleton (12-16, 4-9 WAC) was led by Grayson Schirpik who totaled 10 kills followed by Breanna McDonough who landed nine kills on .444 hitting, but NM State (14-11, 6-7 WAC) was able to hold the Texans to just .125 hitting to secure the win.

Sets one and two saw Tarleton fall by the same score of 25-16. The Texans jumped out to a fast 3-0 lead in the first set as Schirpik landed a pair of kills and Ailie Hair fired in an ace to add to her team lead. The teams battled it out to a 9-9 draw, but NM State immediately tore off a 5-0 run and never allowed the Texans back in the set.

Tarleton got down 5-0 in set two and were never able to recover, with the closest they cut the Aggies lead to being four points at 6-2.

The Texans were able to throw a scare into the Aggies in set three as they ripped off a 5-0 run down 22-13 to bring it within four at 22-18. NM State responded by scoring three of the next four, with two kills from Katie Birtcil to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-0. The Aggies were led by Molly Johnson's 16 kills on 32 attacks.
