CEDAR CITY, Utah
– Tarleton State saw its WAC Tournament chances evaporate after a 1-0 loss at Southern Utah at the Thunderbirds Soccer Complex.
With the victory, Southern Utah (3-3-1 WAC, 3-8-5 Overall) currently is in sixth in the WAC, the final spot for the conference tournament, four points ahead of Abilene Christian with two games left to play. Tarleton State (1-5-1, 4-10-3) has been eliminated from the post season, falling six points behind Southern Utah, the maximum they would be able to gain but the Texans do not have the tiebreaker with neither the Thunderbirds nor ACU.
Avery Harr broke the single-season shots on goal program record she set last season with a pair to increase her total to 17.
The WAC-leader in saves,
Mikayla Kendall kept the Texans in the game foiling more Thunderbirds scoring attempts than her five saves credit her.
Lauren Grissom tied her season high with three shots including one on goal for the Texans.
In the 16
th minute, Harr started an attack from midfield. The sophomore battled one-on-one all the way to goal finally beating her defender and firing a low shot at the Thunderbird keeper who was able to knock it away. With the shot on goal, Harr broke the single-season shot on goal record which she set last year.
The Texans were only credited with a single shot on goal and the Thunderbirds with two despite the constant action in front of each goal in the first half.
In the 68
th minute, Mayu Yamamoto found the back of the net after two previous crossbar shots to break the deadlock in favor of the Thunderbirds. Yamamoto led all attackers with six total shots including four on goal.
In the final 45 seconds of action, Tarleton frantically attempted to earn a draw. After a flurry of action in the scoring third, the Texans were never able to get a true shot off and ultimately fell, 1-0.
Tarleton held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-2 with six coming in the first half. Southern Utah led 11-8 in shots and 6-3 in shots on goal. For the first time in WAC play, Tarleton had more fouls than its opponent, 7-6.
Tarleton State will return home for a pair of games next week. The Texans will host California Baptist on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Tarleton Soccer Complex for Pups at the Pitch. On Sunday,
Macie Witter will be honored in her final home game as a Texan before a 1 p.m. kick against Grand Canyon.
