STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State fell to Utah Valley in its WAC home opener, 3-0 on Thursday night at the Tarleton Soccer Complex.
Utah Valley improves to 4-0-1 at the top of the WAC and 7-3-4 overall. The Texans fall to 1-2-1 in conference play and 4-7-3 overall.
The WAC's saves leader,
Mikayla Kendall, added 10 saves increasing her leading total to 91 on the season.
For the first time in WAC action, the Texans did not allow Utah Valley's leading scorer Faith Webber to record a goal or assist. She has been held pointless in just five of her 14 games played. Webber is the WAC's leading goal and point scorer and is second in the nation in total goals.
Nicole Fels recorded a pair of shots for Tarleton including one on goal.
For the first time in Tarleton Soccer program history, the national anthem was sung live by Kendall Wilson prior to first kick.
The Wolverines pressured Tarleton early on, forcing three shots on goal in the first five minutes of play, all saved by Kendall.
Utah Valley broke through the tough Texan defense in the 31st minute of the first half. Heather Stainbrook's free kick from the top left of the box found the hands of a diving Kendall. However, Ruby Hladek was able to find the deflection off Kendall's hands and pocket it in the back of the net to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Wolverines struck again three minutes into the second half. Manthy Brady found the right foot of Heather Stainbrook for her sixth goal of the season to put the Wolverines ahead, 2-0.
Utah Valley tacked on its third goal of the game exactly at the 53
rd minute of play. Nicole Olanda fired in a long shot from the top of the 18-yard box on an assist from the left corner by Ashley Hughes.
For the first time at home since the program's inception in 2022, rain fell onto the pitch at a rather constant rate for the last eight minutes of the contest.
The Wolverines out shot the Texans, 30-5 and 16-2 on goal.
Tarleton State will return to the pitch on Sunday at noon to host the Redhawks of Seattle U. Kyle Crews will be on the call on ESPN+ and as always admission is free to the Tarleton Soccer Complex.
