Texans split opening pair at UTEP Invitational against Roadrunners and Roos

EL PASO, Texas – Tarleton opened their five-game slate at the UTEP Invitational with a split against California State Bakersfield and Missouri-Kansas City on Friday at Helen of Troy Field in El Paso, Texas.

In the first game, the Texans (10-5) fell behind 3-0 through four innings, losing 4-1 to the Roadrunners (3-10). In the second game, Tarleton broke open a scoreless affair with two runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth for a 6-2 win against the Roos (3-8).

Cal State Bakersfield 4, Tarleton 1
The Texans scattered four hits from four different players – Morgan Medford, Kayla Wallace, Kelci Hill and Austin Germain – plus had five walks, two by MacKenzie Peterson, but they left seven on base in the three-run loss.

Kennedy Ferguson got the start, escaping from a runner in scoring position each of the first two innings before the first runs of the game came across in the third inning on CSU-Bakersfield's two-run home run. In the fourth, the Roadrunners opened with back-to-back extra-base hits to go up 3-0, but Ferguson avoided any more trouble.

In the bottom of the fifth, Tarleton took advantage of back-to-back walks with an RBI single by Hill that scored Medford to make it 3-1.

Tristan Bridges relieved Ferguson in the sixth after a solo shot by the Roadrunners. Ferguson (2-1) went 5.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits and three walks, with one strikeout.

Bridges was strong out of the bullpen, allowing no runs on just one hit and no walks with two strikeouts in two innings. But Tarleton couldn't get much going in the bottom halves. CSU-Bakersfield's Brianna Sanchez pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on four hits and five walks with five strikeouts.

Tarleton 6, Missouri-Kansas City 2
Tarleton starting pitcher Grace Garcia got her first start since pitching a perfect game and had another impressive performance, not allowing a run until the seventh inning as she went the distance. The senior improved to 5-0 on the year, allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. She leads the purple and white with a 1.36 ERA and 0.97 WHIP on the year in 36.0 IP.

After not much action through the first four innings with no runs, Katy Schaefer broke through with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth, also plating Medford. A long sixth inning saw Tarleton plate four to take a 6-0 lead, as Tristyn Trull scored on an error, Germain drove in Hayden Fox on a single, Alexis Hoang scored on another error, and Hill scored Bella Hernandez on a single.

Germain, Medford and Jordan Dickerson each had two hits, while Hill, Schaefer, Trull and Fox finished with one. Tarleton outhit the Roos 10-3.

The Texans dealt Camryn Stickel the loss, dropping her to 1-3 as she allowed five earned runs on seven hits, two walks and two hit batters in 5.1 IP, earning two strikeouts.

The Texans have another pair at the UTEP Invitational on Saturday before finishing their tournament in El Paso on Sunday. Next up is a rematch with the Roos at 11 a.m. CT, followed by a 5 p.m. CT game against the host Miners.
