Every team's goal is to be invited to compete in the postseason, and Men's Basketball is one of the teams to accomplish that.

TARLETON MEN'S BASKETBALL began the WAC tournament on a high note, defeating UTRGV 74-70 to earn their first NCAA Division I conference tournament win in Tarleton Athletics history. Tarleton led the Vaqueros for 37:33 of the 40 minutes, but like most conference postseason games, it was never truly over. Clearly energized to be playing in their first D1 conference tournament, the Texans raced out to a 21-4 lead. But, in a game of runs, UTRGV refused to end their WAC Tournament run in the first 10 minutes, and answered with a 9-0 burst to get back within eight. They continued to chip away to get within one-possession at the break, 31-28. The Vaqueros took their first lead since 2-0 with over 11 minutes remaining, but that only lasted 16 seconds after the Texans answered to make it 50-49. Tarleton went on an 11-0 run after that, with another 8-0 a little while later that put the Texans up 15 with 5:26 left. It wouldn't be March without some more runs, so UTRGV went on two separate 7-0 runs to make it a one-possession game with about 90 ticks left. The Vaqueros never took the lead in the final minutes, but they continued to answer any cushion scoring plays the Texans would make, cutting it to as close as two points. Luckily, they struggled from the free throw line late to give Tarleton some breathing room and take the win. Jakorie Smith stepped up in the biggest game of the season with career-highs in points and rebounds, recording 26 points and eight boards. Freddy Hicks and Shamir Bogues were the other top scorers in the game, as Hicks finished with 18 points and Bogues had 17. The 7-seed Texans had another competitive contest against the 2-seed Utah Valley Wolverines in the quarterfinal matchup, but Utah Valley ran away with it late to win 72-58. Tarleton gave it their all in this game, storming back from a 10-point first half deficit to within a couple of possessions most of the second half, getting within a point with just over 14 minutes to play. But the Wolverines pounded the boards and blocked 10 shots, using a late 16-5 run to turn a 47-43 lead into a 63-48 advantage. The Wolverines outrebounded the Texans 37-26 in the game. Smith led the Texans in scoring for the second straight time in Vegas with 12 points. Three other Texans scored in double figures, and Bogues had 11 points and Hicks and Tiger Booker each had 10. The postseason is not over for the Texans after the quarterfinal loss in the WAC Tournament, as they were invited to the 2023 Discount Tire College Basketball Invitational in Daytona Beach, Florida, to compete in the program's first Division I postseason national tournament. Tarleton, who was tabbed as the No. 7 seed, will open their CBI run against No. 10 seed Radford on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Radford competes in the Big South conference and went 19-14 on the season. Tarleton is one of 16 teams who will participate in the CBI, held March 18-22. If the Texans pull off the win against Radford, they will face the winner of No. 2 seed San Jose State and No. 15 seed Southern Indiana in the quarterfinals at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, March 20.

TEXAN BASEBALL began and ended the week on high notes, going 2-2 last week. They began with a 17-1 seven inning win over Randall University, scoring over 15 runs for the fourth time this season. Tyson Drake hit his second career home run, a grand slam, in the bottom of the third inning. He led the Texans with four RBI. Senior Carter Dobrinski finished with three hits, a season-high, and two RBI. Sophomore transfer Brandon Howell notched his first two hits of the season as well as finishing with two RBI. Three other Texans, Cole Miears, Payton Pennington and Jake Escalon each contributed two RBI in the win. The Texans began then began their conference play against UT Arlington, losing the series 1-2. They fell in the first game 5-2 where they struggled to get their offense going. Tarleton's first run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth as they trailed 5-0. Second baseman Jordan Andrade hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall to make it 5-1. The Texans threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with no outs. The Mavericks brought in a new pitcher that led to a double play that still plated a run, but ended on a pop fly that secured UTA's win. Tarleton's offense responded in a big way with eight runs on 16 hits during Saturday's game, but the Mavericks managed 16 hits of their own, plating eight runs in the final three frames to secure the series victory with a 12-8 win. Tarleton took a 6-4 lead in the fourth inning as Mason Hammonds launched a two-run home run to right field. They held onto that lead for two more innings until UTA brought three runs home in the seventh, reclaiming the lead at 7-6 and never looking back. The Texans were led offensively by Kooper Shook and Trace Morrison who each had three hits and totaled four runs scored. Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo and Hammonds each pitched in two hits and two RBI. Tarleton ended the weekend on a high note, walking the Mavericks off 5-4 in the ninth inning for their first conference win of the season. A wild pitch that escaped UTA's catcher to the backstop brought Tarleton's Jack Wagner sliding safely home from third base. This was also the Texans' first win over UTA at the Division I level as they were previously 0-5. Trailing 4-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Texans proceeded to scratch across three runs to tie the game at four. With two outs and two runners on, Shook hit an RBI single that landed just in front of the UTA right fielder to make it 4-2. Grant Kerry and Cole Miears were then hit by pitches in consecutive at-bats as the Texans made it 4-3. The tying run came in courtesy of a UTA wild pitch as Shook jetted home from third base. The rest is history, as Dobrinski singled to right field in the ninth to get Wagner to third before he stole home on the passed ball. Jake Burcham (W, 1-1) threw 3.0 innings, blanking the Mavericks in the eighth and ninth innings to help fuel the Texan comeback and earn his first win of the season. Tarleton remains at home this week, beginning Tuesday at 3 p.m. when they host Oral Roberts. This will be a Community Day where fans are encouraged to bring new and/or gently used baseball equipment to donate and redeem up to five free tickets for admission to the game. All donations will go toward the Stephenville Sox organization here in town. Their next series will begin on Friday against UIW at 6 p.m. This also falls on St. Patrick's Day, so we will have free necklaces with a green, four-leaf clover and Tarleton logo on them for the first 150 fans. Saturday's game will be at 3 p.m. while the series finale on Sunday will be at 1 p.m. Each of those games will be Bark at the Park, presented by Dapper Dog, where fans can bring their pups to the stands and can get purple tennis balls, frisbees and treats for them if they join. Tarleton will be back on the road the following week, beginning in Arlington when they take on UTA again on Tuesday, March 21.

TARLETON SOFTBALL had a slow start in their first game against Houston, falling 7-0 on Friday night. The Cougars put up a four-spot in the first, although three of the four runs were unearned. Tarleton had a tough day offensively, getting just three runners on through the first four innings. Down 7-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Tarleton loaded the bases for their best scoring chance of the game, but a fielder's choice to third ended the game. Katy Schaefer, Morgan Medford and Kiana Gibson were the only Texans that recorded a hit in the contest. The Texans came out with vengeance on their mind Saturday afternoon and evened their series with Houston on a 9-1, five inning victory. Tristan Bridges set the tone early with a 1-2-3 top of the first inning and then the offense went to work. The Texans loaded the bases on two walks and a Kelci Hill single before Schaefer cashed in the first run of the game on an RBI single. Tarleton would go on to plate three more in the inning on two passed balls and an RBI groundout by Tristyn Trull to give the Texans a 4-0 lead after the first. Houston scored their first, and only, run of the game in the top of the third, but Jordan Dickerson had an answer in the bottom half, knocking a ball into the left-field parking lot for a 5-1 lead. Tarleton put the game away two innings later, as they had runners on second and third with two outs and Kaylin Ortner walked to load the bases. Austin Germain followed with an RBI free pass before Medford turned on a pitch and ripped a double into the right center gap to walk the Texans off winners 9-1. Medford and Schaefer led the Texans with two hits each while Hill, Dickerson and Kayla Wallace had one hit each. Tarleton had its chances but couldn't capitalize throughout the game as Houston took the rubber game 5-0 Sunday afternoon. After the Cougars put up a two spot in the opening frame, Tarleton loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but could not score off it. Houston tacked on another run in the fourth inning, followed by a two-run homer in the fifth to give them the 5-0 lead. The Texans got back in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth after singles from Brittany Coe and Gibson but could do no more than that as Houston sat down the next three batters in order. Tarleton's next game will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. as they host UTSA in a Community Night game. Fans are encouraged to bring new and/or gently used softball equipment to donate and redeem up to five free tickets for admission to the game. All donations will go toward the Stephenville Sox organization here in town. The Texans will begin their conference play on the road when they head up to Seattle U, beginning with a 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. doubleheader on Friday. They will conclude the series at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Tarleton will remain on the road for their next series when they head to Phoenix to take on Grand Canyon March 24-25.

TEXAN WOMEN'S TENNIS dropped their first home match of the season to Louisiana Tech 4-1. Although the final score may indicate otherwise, the Texans and Lady Techsters were neck-and-neck throughout the afternoon. Because the teams agree to play "clinch" – meaning when the team result is in hand all remaining matched go unfinished – Tarleton was on the brink of winning the other two singles matches that would have made the final score 4-3. This was the same team that handed the Texans one of their four losses last season as well. The doubles matches began with two 6-0 results, one for each team. Martha Makantasi and Clara Sobius paired together for the first time overall this season and shut out their Louisiana Tech opponents. The Lady Techsters took the doubles point after their team took a 6-2 victory over Celia Vaudiau and Elif Albayrak on Court 3. In singles, four of the six matches went all three sets. Sobius took one of the victories that only went two sets, winning 6-3 6-3. Ximena Morales was defeated 6-2 6-0 on Court 4 giving Louisiana Tech a 2-1 advantage on the day. In the other four singles matches, Makantasi and Elsa Boisson each won the first set, and Emma Persson and Vaudiau lost the first one. It was the opposite story for each match in the second set. Makantasi suffered the next loss after leading 6-2 5-4, falling 6-2 5-7 2-6. After Persson won the second set 6-4, the Lady Techsters clinched the win with a 6-1 third set, beating Persson 6-4 4-6 6-1. On Court 3, Boisson was close to match point, ahead 7-5 2-6 4-1 before the match went unfinished. On Court 6, Vaudiau was ahead 4-6 6-3 2-1 before the match went unfinished, as well. The Texans have a busy week at home ahead, beginning Tuesday when they host Drake at 1 p.m. Their next match will begin WAC play for the season against UTRGV at 1 p.m. on Friday with poster making stations available for fans as they attend. They will conclude the week on Sunday at 1 p.m. against UTA, which will also be a Dog Day, where fans are encouraged to bring their pups to the court and can get purple tennis balls and treats for them, courtesy of Dapper Dog. Tarleton will be on the road the following week, beginning March 24 when they take on Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches.

TEXAN MEN'S GOLF placed third at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational and had their best score to par of the season at -10. Jack Anderson was already having an incredible spring and it got exponentially better this week, as he holed two birdies late to cap off his tournament victory, the first individual title by a Texan in the NCAA Division I era. He shot -12 for medalist honors at the Invitational. This makes two top-two finishes in the last three tournaments for Anderson, following his silver medal achievement at the Pat Hicks Invitational in mid-February. Max Bengtsson placed tied-sixth to help lead the Texans to their top-three result. The Texans will have about three weeks off before their next tournament, the Big Texan Invitational at Comanche Trace in Kerrville, Texas, on March 27-28.
