SEATTLE, Wash. – Home runs lifted Tarleton past Seattle U in the second game of the WAC-series opening doubleheader Friday night.
Game 1: Seattle U 12, Tarleton 5
Tarleton watched as a 5-0 lead trickled away and Seattle U took the first game of the series 12-5 Friday afternoon at Logan Field.
The Texans came out hot at the plate with two walks and two singles to score the first run of the game before
Tristyn Trull ripped a bases-clearing triple into the right center gap for a 4-0 advantage after one.
After a shutdown bottom of the first, Tarleton tacked on one more in the second on a sacrifice fly from
Kelci Hill to score Amanda DeSario for a 5-0 Tarleton lead.
A home run from Seattle in the bottom of the second sparked life into the Redhawk offense. That run was the first of 12 unanswered runs for Seattle, who plated runs in every inning the rest of the way including a four-run third and back-to-back three-run innings to finish out the game.
Morgan Medford led the way offensively for the Texans with a 3-4 day and a run scored. Trull,
Austin Germain and
Katy Schaefer supplied one hit each to complete the offense for the Texans.
Tristan Bridges and
Kennedy Ferguson combined to pitch the six innings in the circle.
Game 2: Tarleton 7, Seattle U 3
The Texans rebounded nicely from their game one defeat by upending the host Redhawks 7-3 in the nightcap.
Seattle U jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings with two in the first and one in the second. For the Redhawks, it marked the sixth and seventh consecutive innings scoring runs dating back to the second inning of game one.
But then, Tarleton flipped the script.
With two on and two out in the top of the third,
Kayla Wallace hit the reset button on game two with a laser over the fence in right center to score Hill and
Kiana Gibson and tie the game at 3-3.
Grace Garcia answered the call in the bottom half with the first 1-2-3 inning by a Tarleton pitcher today.
Tarleton continued its offensive attack in their next inning – again with two outs. With Germain and Medford on first and second with two outs,
Katy Schaefer ripped an RBI single to left to bring home Germain. In the next at bat,
Kiana Gibson demolished a pitch for a three-run home run to extend the lead to 7-3.
Meanwhile, Garcia was in the groove.
The senior right-handers allowed only an error and a two-out double in the sixth the rest of the way. She improved to 8-3 in the circle this season with a complete-game effort. She allowed three runs – two earned – on five hits and a walk. She struck out two.
Tarleton pounded out 11 hits in the game with two each from Medford, Hill, and Trull. Schaefer, Gibson, Wallace, Coe, and
MacKenzie Peterson had one hit each for Tarleton. Gibson and Wallace each had three RBI off long balls.
Tarleton and Seattle U will play the rubber game tomorrow at 3 p.m. CT / 1 p.m. PT.
