Tarleton’s tough slate in Oklahoma continues against Jackrabbits and third-ranked Cowgirls

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Tulsa/OSU Tournament Tarleton is playing in this week has featured elite competition throughout, and it got no easier for the Texans on Saturday, taking on South Dakota State again before playing the third ranked team in the nation, Oklahoma State.

The Texans (12-11) dropped the pair, 10-2 against the Jackrabbits (12-7) and 11-2 in five innings against No. 3 Oklahoma State (17-1).

"We played a lot tougher today against two very good teams," said head coach Mark Cumpian. "We had our opportunities in game one before letting it slip away. I'm proud of how we battled today. My hope is that playing this tough of a schedule will get us ready for conference play."

South Dakota State 10, Tarleton 2
Saturday's game was a rematch between the Texans and Jackrabbits, as South Dakota State knocked off Tarleton a day before, 11-0. The purple and white put out a much better showing this time around, and was in position late to take the win, but the seventh inning got away from them in their 10-2 loss.

Tristan Bridges began in the circle and got Tarleton started on the right foot, sitting down three straight Jackrabbits to start the game. In the second inning she got out of a jam, two runners on with no outs, inducing a pop out, fly out and strikeout. The Jackrabbits got the first run of the game to start the third inning, a Jocelyn Carrillo solo shot.

Tarleton needed just one swing in the fourth inning to take the lead. After Jordan Dickerson began with a walk, Austin Germain blasted her second home run of the season to put Tarleton ahead 2-1.

Rozelyn Carrillo answered in the fifth with a two-run home run herself to give South Dakota State the lead back, 3-2.

In the sixth, the Texans threatened to tie it up, with runners on first and second and one out, but a fielder's choice and strikeout sent a one-run game to the seventh. In the final frame, the Jackrabbits loaded the bases with one out. On a fielder's choice, shortstop Tristyn Trull threw out the runner at the plate to keep it a one-run game with two outs. South Dakota State following by drawing three straight walks to score three runs, then got two hits to score four more, making it a seven-spot in the seventh inning.

Bridges (3-5) went 6.2 IP, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits and eight walks, with three strikeouts. Grace Garcia came on relief in the seventh, allowing two earned runs on two hits and a walk in 0.1 IP. South Dakota State's Tori Kniesche (6-1) went five innings, giving up two earned runs on one hit and three walks, with six strikeouts.

Germain went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a walk, scoring a run. Katy Schaefer and Amanda DeSario provided the other hits.

No. 3 Oklahoma State 11, Tarleton 2 (5 Innings)
Tarleton had their work cut out for them in the second game on Saturday, taking on the No. 3 ranked Cowgirls in Stillwater. Oklahoma State scored five runs in the first and never looked back, winning it in run-rule fashion.

The Texans scored two in the second inning to make it 5-2, with Brady Rowland earning an RBI on a fielder's choice to start. Trull later scored on an error. The Cowgirls added one back in the bottom half, then turned in five more in the fourth.

Kennedy Ferguson (3-2) started in the circle for Tarleton, going 3.1 IP, allowing 10 earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. Bridges (0.1 IP, one run, one hit, two walks) and Garcia (0.1 IP) pitched in relief. Ivy Rosenberry (3-1) started for Oklahoma State, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk, with two strikeouts.
