STILLWATER, Okla. – Tarleton got a great outing from
Grace Garcia and hit the scoreboard heavy late to leave Oklahoma with a win in the Tulsa/OSU Tournament.
The Texans (13-11) snapped their four-game slide in the event with a 6-1 win over the Maine Black Bears (4-10), scoring all six runs over the final two innings, including a five-spot in the seventh.
Garcia (7-2) gave up her lone run, unearned, in the first inning, as she pitched a complete game, allowing four hits while striking out four. She leads the teams in both wins, ERA (2.41) and WHIP (1.22).
After the first inning run, Garcia sent nine straight Black Bears packing, and it should've been more, if not for an error in the fourth inning. But it was no harm, no foul, and she went three-up three-down once again in the bottom of the fifth to keep the Texans in it, who had just two hits through five.
In the sixth, the Texans tied up the game after
Paige Nunes opened with a double. Amanda DeSario pinch ran, and
Kelci Hill advanced her to third on a fly out to center, followed by an
Austin Germain sacrifice fly to tie the game 1-1 going into the bottom half. Maine got a one-out double, but Garcia induced back-to-back groundouts, sending the game to the seventh inning knotted up.
Brady Rowland opened with a single, then
Kayla Wallace placed her bunt down so perfectly it counted as a single, and the Texans had two runners on with no outs.
Morgan Medford advanced both runners into scoring position, then
Kiana Gibson hit a grounder to third that was misplayed, scoring the go-ahead run as she reached safely.
Jordan Dickerson then knocked two in with a single to make it 4-1, and both Hill and
Katy Schaefer added RBI singles later for a five-run inning.
In the bottom half, Garcia faced the minimum for the fourth time on the day, sending the Black Bears out in order to win Tarleton's final regular season tournament game of the year.
Tarleton outhit Maine 8-4 and each team committed two errors. Eight different Texans had a hit; Dickerson (two RBI, one run), Hill (one RBI), Schaefer (one RBI), Nunes, Rowland, Wallace, Medford and
MacKenzie Peterson.
The Texans will now have their first home series in non-tournament action beginning Friday against Houston, who will head to Stephenville for three games over three days. First pitch on Friday at the Tarleton Softball Complex will be at 5 p.m. CT.
