Texans rout Trailblazers in regular season finale, turn attention to WAC Women’s Tennis Tournament

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The rout was on in St. George, Utah, on Sunday, with Tarleton unrelenting against Utah Tech in the regular season finale.

The Texans won the doubles point with ease and all singles matches in straight sets to shut out the Trailblazers 7-0 on the road. Tarleton finished the regular season 15-6 overall and 7-2 in WAC play. They seemingly have locked up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming WAC Women's Tennis Tournament, with an expected official bracket to be released on Monday.

This marked Tarleton's fourth straight match win and fourth shutout of the season. They finished with an 8-3 record in true road matches, and are now 17-3 in conference matches since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2020-21.

Utah Tech, meanwhile, fell to 2-19 overall and 0-9 in WAC play, plus an 0-10 spot at home on the Trailblazer Tennis Courts.

To start, Tarleton changed up their Nos. 2-3 doubles pairings, putting Emma Persson with Clara Sobius on Court 3 and Celia Vaudiau with Elsa Boisson on Court 2. Persson and Sobius earned the first victory 6-3 over Raquel Roshak and Cami Oyama, then Vaudiau and Boisson defeated Ya-Chi Hsu and Adithi Venkatakrishnan 6-2. Martha Makantasi and Ximena Morales swept the doubles matches for the purple and white with a 6-3 win in the top flight over Rachel Mellor and Annemiek Sterk.

In singles play, Tarleton rolled through all six matches in straight sets.

Vaudiau first dealt her opponent bagels, winning 6-0 6-0 against Jane Dorny on Court 6. Vaudiau (8-4) closed her regular season with six straight singles wins, not suffering a loss since Feb. 18. In her Tarleton career, Vaudiau was flawless against all WAC opponents in conference play. In three seasons, the Texan senior went 15-0 in singles in WAC play.

Makantasi made it 3-0 Tarleton with a 6-1 6-3 win on Court 2 over Hsu. She won her third straight singles match to nearly reach the .500 mark once again, finishing the regular season campaign 9-10.

Boisson did her usual thing in her team match clinching victory, taking her seventh straight singles win with a 6-4 6-1 defeat of Venkatakrishnan on Court 3. Boisson finished the regular season with Tarleton's best singles record at 15-4.

Sobius also reached the 15-win plateau with a 6-4 6-1 win over Roshak on Court 5. She won four straight to end her regular season, putting her record at 15-6 overall, 6-1 on Courts 4-5.

Persson snapped a rare slide with a 6-4 6-2 win over Mellor in the No. 1 position, improving to 14-6 in her freshman campaign.

To finish the shutout, Morales beat Damron 6-2 6-3 to improve to 8-10.

The Texans will now wait to see who they match up with in the WAC Women's Tennis Tournament, their first NCAA Division I conference tournament in program history. The event will take place at the Arlington Tennis Center April 27-29.
