STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Friday's doubleheader was a wide range of emotions as the Texans took the opening game of the series 11-3 before falling in the nightcap. The rubber game of the series is set for noon tomorrow.
Game 1: Tarleton 11, Sam Houston 3 (6)
The Texan offense was fully charged in Friday's doubleheader opener against Sam Houston as Austin Germain's two-run home run in the sixth let the Texans walk it off early with an 11-3 victory.
After Sam Houston jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with solo runs in each of the first two innings, Tarleton struck for a three spot in the second and never looked back. Brady Rowland got Tarleton on the board with an RBI double and then Kelci Hill upped the ante with a two-RBI double later in the inning for a 3-2 Tarleton lead.
Katy Schaefer continued her torrid home stand with her fourth home run in the last two Friday nights to continue the scoring in the Tarleton third. Her solo shot to left center gave the Texans a 4-2 edge before Germain cashed in Kayla Wallace with an RBI single into right with two outs in the inning.
Schaefer tacked on two more RBI in the following inning with a two-run single up the middle before Wallace and Rowland accounted for two more runs in the four-run fourth for Tarleton.
The Bearkats got one back in the fifth, but in the bottom of the sixth, Germain called game. She ripped a laser over the left field wall to plate Rowland and put the Texans in the win column for the 25th time this season.
Grace Garcia went the first 1.1 innings before Kennedy Ferguson earned the win in relief with the final 4.2 innings of work. Ferguson allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Tarleton pounded out 13 hits in the game with Germain's 3-for-4 effort leading the way. Hill, Tristyn Trull, Schaefer, and Rowland all had two-hit efforts while Wallace and Amanda DeSario had one hit each. Schaefer and Germain each drove in three RBI while Hill and Rowland had two each.
Game 2: Sam Houston 16, Tarleton 1 (5)
The nightcap was a nightmare for the home team. The Texans surrendered nine runs in the first on five hits and three errors and it didn't get much better from there as Tarleton lost 16-1.
The Texans will look to avenge the game that dare not speak its name tomorrow at noon in Stephenville.
