Texans make quick work of Panthers, remain perfect at home

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – If someone wasn't actively watching all courts at once, they might have missed a chance to see some Texans in action, as Tarleton State zoomed by Prairie View A&M on Friday.

The Texans (8-1) made quick work of the Panthers (2-13) in Stephenville, winning 6-1 to remain perfect at home, now 4-0. They also avoided back-to-back losses, something they haven't suffered since the first two matches of 2023.

The doubles point quickly went to the Texans as they swept the Panthers 3-0. Martha Makantasi and Maretha Burger won 6-1 at No. 1 over Victoria Castillo and Andrea Pascual Blanca. Then Noelia Lorca and Clara Sobius dispatched Amaya Bobadilla and Cierra Garcia 6-2 on Court 3. Elsa Boisson and Ximena Morales finished the doubles sweep on Court 2 6-4 over Ainara Rodriguez and Francesca Duca.

The Texans are now 22-5 (.815) across doubles play, as Burger and Makantasi improved to 8-1 together. The other two pairs played for the first time together, starting 1-0 each.

In singles action, two Texans shut out their opponent, and the five Texans who won did so in straight sets.

Burger rolled through Garcia on Court 6 to start things off, winning 6-0 6-0 to improve to 6-3 on the year. Makantasi followed suit with a 6-0 6-0 win of her own on Court 2 over Duca to improve to 8-1.

Sobius then clinched the team victory with a 6-1 6-2 win over Pascual Blanca on Court 4, improving to 6-3.

Tarleton's Adeliya Mukhutdinova played her first singles match of the season and won in convincing fashion, knocking off Bobadilla 6-1 6-2 on Court 5.

Boisson took the lone loss for Tarleton State in her first ever match on Court 1, falling 3-6 6-2 0-1[6-10] to Castillo.

Lorca cemented the day for the Purple and White with a 7-5 6-4 win over Rodriguez on Court 3 to remain perfect in singles play on the year, now 9-0.

Across 54 completed singles matches as a team, Tarleton now sports a 40-14 (.741) record.

The Texans will continue their three-match homestand next Saturday, March 9, against UTSA at 12 p.m.
