Texans season ends in WAC Tournament opener against UTA

SEATTLE – Back-to-back single-run innings between the fifth and sixth proved to be the difference for sixth-seeded UT Arlington, knocking out the seventh-seeded Texans in their second ever WAC Tournament appearance in as many years as eligible.

After going up 1-0 in the first, the Mavericks scored one each in the fifth and sixth to pull off the 2-1 comeback win in the single elimination portion of the tournament with the following rounds moving to double elimination.

The Texans' lone run came in the top of the first as Kalyn Hill singled to right field scoring Kayla Wallace to make it 1-0.

For the next three innings the two teams traded punches putting up zeros on the scoreboard before UTA broke up the shutout with a run in the fifth. Morgan Westbrook doubled to right center driving in Zaia Castruita to tie it 1-1 heading into the sixth.

In the top of the sixth, both Katy Schaefer and Brady Rowland reached on a pair of walks before Hayden Fox hit into a fielder's choice to end the Texans' threat.

The bottom of the sixth brought the gut punch that ultimately ended the Texans season. With two outs and nobody on, Camille Corona induced a walk. Jessica Adams then doubled down the left field line to score the pinch runner Nicole Hill, making it 2-1 UTA after six.

In the top of the seventh in her last collegiate at-bat, Kelci Hill hit a ground-rule double to center field putting the tying run on and the go-ahead to the plate. She was ultimately left on as the Purple and White fell in the first round of the WAC Tournament.

For the Mavericks, Gracie Bumpurs earned the start and picked up the win moving to 4-8 on the season. Bumpurs went 6.1 innings giving up just one run on five hits, struck out two and walked four. Abi Gutierez tossed the final 0.2 inning giving up no runs on not hits and struck out one.

For the Texans, Hannah Blincoe got the start in the circle and went the bulk of the game going 5.0 innings. She gave up one run on five hits, struck out and pair and walked two as well. Alexa Rehmeier went 0.2 IP giving up one run on one hit and walked three. She took the loss and finished the season at an even 7-7. Kynlee Marquez threw the final 0.1 innings for the Texans as she put up zeros across the board in all categories.

Seven seniors played their final game donning the Purple and White: Wallace, Kelci Hill, Ashlee LaRue, Rowland, Jordan Dickerson, Schaefer and Makenzie Dunbar.

Schaefer ends her historic four-year Texan career at third all-time in home runs with 39. The Sweeny, Texas, native, also finished third all-time in RBI with 186 and fifth all-time in defensive assist with 339.

UT Arlington moves to 22-32 on the season and will now face third-seeded Utah Valley Wednesday afternoon.

Tarleton State finishes their season 23-32 winning 20-plus game for the third straight season.
