Tarleton State Tennis handles Prairie View A&M for fourth straight win

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Tarleton State Tennis took care of business in its first road match of 2025 and defeated Prairie View A&M 7-0 on Saturday at the PVAMU Tennis Courts.

The Texans won its fourth consecutive match and are now 4-0 to start the season for the second consecutive year. Tarleton State only lost a combined five games in doubles and did not drop a set in singles on Saturday.

Senior Maretha Burger and junior Emma Persson, the reigning WAC Doubles Team of the Week, stayed perfect on the season by clinching their fourth victory of the year. Burger/Persson defeated Prairie View A&M's Andrea Pascual and Daniela Garcia 6-2 to get doubles started.

The Texans clinched the doubles point thanks to wins from freshman Maria Castano and junior Clara Sobius along with freshman Duru Kuscu and senior Noelia Lorca. Castano/Sobius defeated Precious Ugochukwu and Cierra Garcia 6-1 while Kuscu/Lorca came out victorious against Ain Vegal Rodriguez and Amaya Bobadilla 6-2.

Sobius gave the Texans a 2-0 lead with her singles win on Court 5, only dropping two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Yasmin El Fadili. Entering the match with a perfect 3-0 singles record at the No. 4 spot, Castano's performance continued to elevate. Castano did not lose a game in set one and dominated for her fourth win of the season 6-0, 6-1.

Not playing a singles match yet this season did not slow down Lorca. The 2024 WAC Tennis Invitational singles champion did not lose a game in her first singles set of 2025. Lorca, a 2024 WAC All-Conference Second Team honoree, helped the Texans clinch the match by capturing her first singles win of the spring 6-0, 6-1 on Court 3.

Junior Adeliya Mukhutdinova continued her strong start to the season at the No. 6 spot, coming up with a bagel in her third consecutive match. She collected her third win of the season with a 6-2, 6-0 win on Court 6 over Precious Ugochukwu. Persson also picked up her third singles win of the season, defeating Ain Vegal Rodriguez 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.

Kuscu, the reigning WAC Singles Player of the Week, stayed undefeated with a 4-0 record following her singles win at the No. 2 spot. The freshman from Turkey defeated Andrea Pascual in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 on Court 2, capping off the 7-0 win for the Texans.

Tarleton State wraps up its weekend road trip at Big 12 foe Houston Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Tennis Facility. Houston will be the first Big 12 opponent the Texans face since Oklahoma on Jan. 14, 2023.
