Tarleton State wins big over SEMO, falls to Memphis on Day 2 of Best on the Bayou

MONROE, La. – Saturday afternoon the Texans secured their 13th win of the season with a 9-3 win over SEMO after falling to Memphis 4-3 in Game 1 of the day as the Purple and White move to 13-7 on the season.

After Tarleton State led wire-to-wire in the Texans first meeting with the Tigers on the weekend, the squad from Memphis came out hot putting up a two-spot in the first to take an early 2-0 lead.
 
With Kayla Clement and Kennedy Semien on, Clement stole second as Semien scored on the throw to make it 1-0 Tigers. McKaylee Polk then doubled to right center scoring Clement to move it to a 2-0 lead.
 
The second inning went scoreless for both sides before the Texans took the lead in the bottom of the third.
 
With Mikaila Gilliland (pinch ran for Austin Germain) and Alyssa Budisalovich on, Gilliland stole second and then advanced to third on a throwing error as Budisalovich scored from third to make it 2-1.
 
Haley Hughes then singled to left center scoring Gilliland to tie it up 2-2. Hayden Fox then singled up the middle scoring Tristyn Trull (reached on a fielder's choice) making it 3-2 Texans.
 
The fourth inning was once again quiet before the Tigers scored the winning runs in the top of the fifth. In the fifth, Semien advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a throwing error after Faith Brown scored on the wild pitch to make it 4-3, the final.
 
For the Texans, Hannah Blincoe earned the start in the circle and went five innings as she took the loss and moves to 3-4 on the season. The gave up four runs (all earned) on three hits while she struck out two and walked a trio. Alexa Rehmeier took over for the two innings as she gave up just two hits as she struck out three and walked just one.
 
For the Tigers, Taniyah Brown went the distance earning her fourth win of the season moving to 4-3 on the season. She gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while she walked four and struck out two.

Just 30 minutes after falling to the Tigers, the Texans got back to work looking for a big offensive showing and the squad from Stephenville did just that as they took down SEMO (2024 Regional team) 9-3 for their 13th win of the season as No. 13 Shelby Schultz earned her fifth win of her young collegiate career.
 
The Texans once again gave up a two-spot to the team across the diamond going down 2-0 in the first.
 
Sydney Melton singled up the middle scoring Sydney Dennis and Madison Winkler to make it 2-0 Redhawks.
 
The second inning went scoreless for both teams before the Texans took the lead in the top of the third and never looked back. With Germain and Budisalovich on, Trull hit her second long ball in two days as she made it 3-2 Tarleton State.
 
Just like the second inning, the fourth inning was quiet as well before the Purple and White blew the doors off in the top of the fifth.
 
With bases loaded in the fifth, Kalyn Hill stepped to the plate and singled to center as everyone moved base to base with Germain scoring to make it 4-2 Texans. Fox then singled up the middle with bases loaded and scored Trull and Hughes to push it to 6-2.
 
Then with Fox and Gilliland (pinch ran for Hill) on, freshman JJ Duke stepped to the plate pinch hitting for Molly Cochran and wasted no time making an impact in her first off the bench action of the season as she blasted her third homer of her collegiate career (second most on the team) to make it 9-2 in the fifth.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, the Redhawks put up one more run to make it 9-3, the final, as Dennis singled to left scoring Addisyn Martinie.
 
For the Texans, Kynlee Marquez started things for the Purple and White as she went just a third-of-an-inning giving up two runs (both earned) on two hits as she would leave with a no decision. She also walked three. Freshman Shelby Schultz then took over and took the Texans to the end going 6.1 IP picking up her fifth win of her collegiate career moving to 5-1 on the season. She gave up one run (unearned) on six hits and struck out six while walking just one. She has stuck out at least six in all but three of her appearances (10) this season and has sat down 55 thus far.
 
For the Redhawks, Elliott Stinson earned the start and took the loss moving to 1-1 on the season as she went two innings. She gave up two runs (both earned) on one hit while she walked three and struck out four. Willow Van Haren then came in tossed the next two-and-a-thirds inning as she allowed four runs (all earned) on three hits while she walked one and struck out five. Delany Kell finished things out going 2.2 IP. She gave up three runs (all earned) on five hits as she struck out two.
 
Tarleton State is set to return to action Sunday for their final game of the Best on the Bayou, a rematch with the Redhawks for SEMO as the Texans will look to go 2-0 over the squad from Cape Girardeau.
