UTA defeats Tarleton State Tennis in Sunday matinee

ARLINGTON, Texas — UT Arlington won two of the final three singles matches to defeat Tarleton State Tennis 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center.

Tarleton State clinched the doubles point once again, with juniors Ximena Morales and Adeliya Mukhutdinova picking up their second win of the weekend. Freshman Maria Castano won her 12th singles match of the season with a straight sets decision on Court 5, 6-4, 6-3.

Trailing early in doubles did not faze the Texans, retaking the advantage on all three doubles courts. Emma Persson/Noelia Lorca picked up their second win as a duo with a 6-4 win on Court 1 over UTA's Valeriia Ivanovskaia/Mialy Ranaivo. Morales/Mukhutdinova completed the comeback on Court 2, defeating UTA's Ioana Dumitrescu/Ana Paula Jimenez.

UTA, however, took the lead in the match with wins at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles spots. Freshman Maria Castano helped the Texans respond on Court 5, picking up her 12th win of the season with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nika Novikova.

Morales looked to continue her momentum from Saturday's match at North Texas with a set one win on Sunday, but Drumitrescu clinched the second set. Drumitrescu took a 6-5 lead and looked to clinch the match on Court 4 before Morales got two straight points to force a deuce. It was UTA, however, that clinched the final point that allowed the Lady Mavs to take a 3-2 lead on the team scoreboard.

Freshman Duru Kuscu also forced a third set after losing the opening set, winning set two 6-4. UTA's Ivanovskaia went ahead 5-2 in the third set, but Kuscu eyed a comeback after  winning the eighth game. Ivanovskaia won the next game to clinch the match for the Lady Mavs. Lorca's three-set match on Court 3 went unfinished.

Tarleton State returns to Stephenville for match action, facing Grand Canyon on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Tarleton Tennis Complex. The Texans will be giving away free Tarleton State seat cushions and will also celebrate Greek Day. Admission to all Tarleton State Tennis home matches is free.
