Tarleton State Volleyball notches win against Sam Houston in the Islander Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texan Volleyball ended tournament play with a win at the Islander Classic (3-2) against Sam Houston at Dugan Wellness Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.  

"I'm proud of the way we responded after yesterday." said head coach Jazymne Johnson. "The girls were intentional, and we played a more disciplined game today. Alyssa Dinh stepped in and stepped up for us in the middle! Maddie Frank had a great weekend hitting .459. This win took all 16 of my players and I'm proud of them." 

Madison Frank paced the Texans with 14 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, while also adding four blocks at the net. LaNeah Lara contributed 11 kills, and Emma Burke anchored the defense with nine blocks. Breannah Peterson added four more blocks to round out Tarleton State's strong presence at the net. 

Megan Hodges ran the offense with 24 assists while also contributing 10 digs on defense. Teya Nguyen added 20 assists of her own, and Morgan Carter anchored the back row with 24 digs. 

In the opening set, the Texans and Bearkats traded points early until a kill from Peterson gave Tarleton State the edge. Lara and Burke followed with a pair of kills to extend the margin. Alyssa Dinh then delivered four consecutive kills, igniting a seven-point scoring run. A late service ace from Madison Rice-Lockett kept the momentum alive, and Burke and Peterson combined for a block that set up additional kills from Lara and Burke. The Texans closed out the frame with a 25-19 victory. 

In frame two, Tarleton State kept pace early, with kills from Frank and Lara helping the Texans trade points with the Bearkats. Dinh added a pair of timely swings to keep the offense rolling, while Burke and Lara teamed up for a block to slow Sam Houston's run. Down the stretch, Frank came through with a late kill, and Burke and Frank combined for a block to fight off match point. The Texans continued to battle, but the Bearkats managed to close out the set, 25-22. 

Tarleton State started strong in the third set with early kills from Lara and Frank, but Sam Houston quickly strung together points behind service pressure and timely kills to build a 7-2 lead. The Texans responded with a block from Burke and Peterson, followed by back-to-back Sam Houston errors to cut into the deficit. Frank kept the offense alive with a late kill, while Burke added an ace to give the Texans a spark. Despite the Texans efforts, the Bearkats used a long run midway through the set to pull away, and Tarleton fell 25-12 in the frame. 

Tarleton State jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set, trading points with Sam Houston but quickly pulling ahead behind kills from Lara and Frank. Burke and Peterson contributed key blocks, while Nguyen provided both a service ace to extend the Texans' advantage. Midway through the set, Tarleton State maintained pressure with strong offensive swings from Frank and Dinh, and defensive stops from Burke and Peterson kept Sam Houston from closing the gap. The Texans continued to show resilience, with Rice-Lockett delivering a final kill off an assist from Nguyen to secure a 25-23 set victory to keep the Texans in the match.  

The Purple and White came out strong in the final set, quickly establishing a competitive rhythm with early kills from Frank and Lara. Burke and Victoria Fontenot kept the Texans' offense humming, contributing key kills and a service ace that helped maintain momentum. Rice-Lockett added timely kills off Nguyen's assists to keep Tarleton State in control during the mid-set exchanges. Down the stretch, the Texans showcased their resilience, with Burke delivering a clutch kill and Frank adding pressure at the net to bring up match point. Ultimately, Tarleton closed out the set and the match, 15-11, with Burke's final kill securing a hard-fought victory and capping off a determined team effort.  

Madison Frank and Megan Hodges were named to the Islander Classic All-Tournament team. Frank totaled 21 kills and seven blocks over the weekend, while Hodges contributed 38 assists and 13 digs, playing a key role in the Texans' performance. 

The Texans will return to action on Tuesday, where they will face Stephen F. Austin at Shelton Gym in Nacogdoches, Texas. at 6 p.m.
