Tarleton State Tennis falls short to Wyoming, No. 6 Oklahoma in 2026 season opener

NORMAN, Okla. – Tarleton State Tennis was defeated by Wyoming (4-3) and No. 6 nationally-ranked Oklahoma (4-0) in its 2026 season opener on Thursday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Freshmen Aya Ishii and Marissa Minetti both picked up wins in their spring collegiate debut. Senior Ximena Morales collected her first singles win of the season on Court 4 against Wyoming while fellow seniors Emma Persson and Clara Sobius had their first doubles win of 2026 as a duo in the morning match.

"We knew Wyoming and Oklahoma were going to be tough," head coach Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "Both are well coached and very disciplined. The Wyoming match came down to the wire and we fought well. I'm proud of our team's effort today and we learned a lot that will help us later on in the season. We're excited to get back to Stephenville and get back to work. We have an eight-match home stretch and we are ready to put on a show for Texan Nation."

Wyoming 4, Tarleton State 3
Tarleton State and Wyoming drew even early in the doubles portion, with all three courts being tied 3-3 early in the matches. The senior duo of Persson/Sobius allowed the Texans to strike first in doubles, picking up a 6-3 win over Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia/Serina Abriola on Court 3. Wyoming, however, strung together the last two doubles wins to pick up the point and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Wyoming got the first victory in singles to extend the team lead 2-0, but the Texans did not go away quietly. Ishii was in complete control in her first collegiate set of the spring and only lost one game en route to taking the first set. The freshman from Tochigi, Japan, continued her dominance at No. 2 singles, defeating Violetta Borodina in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

After Wyoming's Dilnaz Mashabayeva pulled together four straight points to force a deuce and take the ninth game, senior Ximena Morales was unfazed on Court 4. Morales took control of the next game and obtained four of the next six points to clinch the first set. The senior from Guatemala City, Guatemala, edged out Mashabayeva for a 6-4, 7-5 win.

Ending the fall season ranked No. 111 nationally in ITA, Minetti presented poise in her first collegiate match of the spring. After taking care of business in the first set, Minetti followed suit in set two. Minetti defeated Abriola 6-4, 6-3 on Court 6 to tie the match 3-3 and set up a winner-take-all contest on No. 3 singles.

Despite dropping the first set, Persson persevered and clinched the next set to force a third set. Wyoming, however, came up with six of the next seven games to clinch Court 3 and the match.

No 6 Oklahoma 4, Tarleton State 0
No. 6 nationally-ranked Oklahoma came out firing in their season opener, dominating doubles to take the early lead. The Sooners picked up doubles wins on Courts 2 and 3 to take a one-point lead entering singles play.

Singles wins on Courts 2 and 6 allowed the Sooners to extend the lead, needing just one more point to clinch the match. Oklahoma picked up the singles win on Court 3 to take the match. Matches on Courts 1 and 4 went unfinished.

Tarleton State will open the home portion of its 2026 season with eight straight contests at the Tarleton State Tennis Facility beginning Friday, January 23. The Texans will face Weatherford College at 11 a.m. next Friday to begin the slate. Admission to all Tarleton State Tennis home contests are free to attend.
