Tarleton State Volleyball takes tough five-set loss at Central Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. – Tarleton State Volleyball and Central Arkansas once again went into a five-set thriller, but once again UCA won the battle and defeated the Texans 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 16-25, 25-19, 8-19) on Saturday at the Prince Center.

Tarleton State (8-13, 4-4), who fell to Central Arkansas (6-12, 6-2) last Thursday at Wisdom Gym in five sets, hit .326 in the fourth set to force a fifth and final frame. Central Arkansas opened the fifth set with an 8-0 scoring run and finished the final frame hitting .450 to take the set and the match.

Senior middle blocker Maddie Frank had 10 kills on .300 hitting to go with six block assists, cracking the top 10 on the program's career block assists list. She is now in ninth on the program's career block assists list after passing Amber Strange (2017-20) on Saturday.

Fifth year outside hitter LaNeah Lara led the Texans with 12 kills while senior opposite Breannah Peterson added 11 kills off a .333 hit percentage. Setters Peyton Fadal (21) and Alexis Massey (17) produced double-digit assists and libero Leddy Rae Guinn had her sixth match of the season with 20+ digs with 20 on Saturday.

UCA went on an early 5-0 scoring run to open the match and take command to start the first set. Tarleton State took the Sugar Bears' punch and threw one right back, scoring six straight points to swing the advantage. A UCA kill and service ace tied it up again before a kill from fifth year outside hitter/opposite Madison Rice-Locket gave the Texans a one-point edge.

Central Arkansas went out in front again by going on two separate 3-0 scoring runs, but the Texans answered the challenge once again. A kill from Lara capped off a 5-0 scoring run that allowed the Texans to move ahead. UCA obtained the next point before a pair of Tarleton State points gave the Texans back the lead. Tarleton State got the final two points needed to clinch the first set 25-23.

UCA started the second set on a 3-0 scoring run and never relinquished the lead. Another 3-0 scoring run put the Sugar Bears ahead by six points late in the second set, with UCA's Sarah Carnathan getting the final three kills of the set for the Texans.

Central Arkansas came out of the break firing, hitting .343 in the third set while holding Tarleton State to just a .059 attack percentage. The Sugar Bears capped off the third set with a kill and service ace to win 25-16 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Tarleton State opened the fourth set on a 4-0 scoring run and took an early 12-10 lead. UCA, however, tied it up at 12. The Texans used a kill by Lara and a service ace to retake a two-point lead later in the fourth set.

The Texans later used a 6-0 scoring run to stretch the lead, capitalizing off three kills to force a fifth set.

Central Arkansas kept the Texans quiet in the fifth set, scoring the first eight points of the frame to take early control. The Sugar Bears responded to a pair of points from the Texans by obtaining back-to-back kills to maintain an eight point advantage. UCA finished the job by getting three out of the final four points to take the final set.

Tarleton State wraps up its three-match road trip on Tuesday at UT Arlington at 6 PM at the College Park Center. The Texans then return to Wisdom Gym on Thursday to take on West Georgia at the team's annual Volloween Match.
