UTA knocks off Tarleton State Volleyball in Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas – After Tarleton State Volleyball tied the match with a 25-23 set two win, UT Arlington answered with back-to-back clinching sets to defeat the Texans 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 15-25, 21-25) on Tuesday night at the College Park Center.

UTA (10-11, 4-5 UAC) held Tarleton State (8-14, 4-5 UAC) to just a .154 attacking percentage while hitting .217 on Tuesday night. The win evens the season series between the two teams and puts UTA and Tarleton State in a tie in the United Athletic Conference standings.

Junior setter Peyton Fadal obtained her 1,000th career assist on the fifth point in the third set, matching a season-high 26 assists in the process. Junior middle blocker Alyssa Dinh led the Texans offensively with 12 kills off .306 hitting while senior opposite Breannah Peterson tallied 11 kills. Senior setter Alexis Massey also recorded double-digit assists with 14 and fifth year outside hitter/opposite Madison Rice-Locket added 12 digs. Libero Leddy Rae Guinn recorded her seventh 20+ dig match with 28 digs on Tuesday.

A kill from Dinh gave the Texans the early advantage in the first set, with a kill from Peterson helping the Texans stay out in front. UTA capitalized off back-to-back attack errors to go out in front, but the Texans went on a 4-0 scoring run to retake the lead. UTA, however, caught fire and ended the set in victory.

UTA obtained a kill following a service error that sparked a scoring run. The Mavericks used an 8-0 scoring run to end the first set with a 25-20 victory to go up 1-0.

The Mavericks took the lead early in set two, but Tarleton State forced UTA to cool down. After tying up the score early in the second set, the Texans used three unanswered points to take a one-point lead early in set two. The Texans answered a 3-0 UTA scoring run by scoring four unanswered points to take a 15-13 lead.

UTA tied it at 17 and later took a 20-19 lead following a Tarleton State attack error. Rice-Locket tied it back up with a kill before both teams went back and forth to knot it up at 23 all. The Texans got the final two points needed, with kills from freshman middle blocker Onita Davis and Dinh clinching the second set 25-23 and tying the match 1-1.

Just as they had ended the first set, the Mavericks got on a run and never looked back. UTA led by as many as 11 in the third set and finished the frame hitting .294 to win 25-15.

UTA looked to put Tarleton State away early with a 4-0 run to open the fourth set, but Tarleton State refused to back down. The Texans answered by scoring five unanswered points and went up 9-6 off a service ace from Guinn. The Mavericks swung the advantage by going on a 5-0 scoring run before a kill from Davis and a UTA attack error tied it up again.

Back-to-back kills from UTA made it a two-point lead for the Mavericks, but a kill from Davis made it a 22-21 set. UTA obtained the last three points of the night to come away with a victory in the set and the match.

Tarleton State returns home to Wisdom Gym on Thursday at 6 p.m. for its annual Volloween Match against West Georgia. Fans are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to the match. Tickets start at just $10 and can be purchased here.
