Castano, Ishii to represent Tarleton State Tennis at UAC Fall Individual Championship

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Tarleton State Tennis duo Maria Castano and Aya Ishii will look to defend their fall individual titles from a year ago when they represent the Texans at the UAC Fall Individual Championship at the Governors Tennis Courts starting Friday.

Castano captured the singles title as the No. 1 seed at the Western Athletic Conference Fall Tennis Invitational, qualifying for the ITA Conference Masters Championships in San Diego. She also paired with Ishii to win the WAC Fall Tennis Invitational doubles title last season. They became the first duo in program history to win a match at the ITA Conference Masters Championship.

The Texans will see three new teams in the league since joining the UAC. Tarleton State will compete against Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky and North Alabama while facing former WAC rivals Abilene Christian and UT Arlington.

Both Castano and Ishii earned first-round byes for the singles draw, with their first matches of the quarterfinals taking place on Friday at 1 p.m. The duo also earned a first-round bye in doubles and will play in their semifinal match on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Tarleton State is looking for its third straight fall individual singles title. Noelia Lorca won the singles crown in the WAC's first-ever fall individual championship, with Castano repeating the following year. Last season marked the first fall doubles title at the conference championship for the Texans.
