Tarleton State Volleyball comes home to defeat West Georgia in annual Volloween Match

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Volleyball picked up another Wisdom Gym win, this time coming away victorious against West Georgia 3-1 (25-20, 30-28, 21-25, 25-15) on Thursday night in the Texans' annual Volloween Match.

Tarleton State (9-14, 5-5 UAC) prevented West Georgia (4-17, 0-9 UAC) from clinching the set point on three different occasions in the second frame, coming away with the 30-28 win after obtaining the first set. West Georgia bounced back in the third set before Tarleton State hit .294 in the fourth frame to finish the Wolves off.

Junior middle blocker Alyssa Dinh led with 12 kills and hit .360 in Thursday's match, with freshman middle blocker Onita Davis matching the kill category with 12. Senior opposite Breannah Peterson added 10 kills off .400 hitting while setter Peyton Fadal matched a season-high 26 assists. Freshman setter Kingsley Minus tallied 19 assists and libero Leddy Rae Guinn had her eighth 20+ dig match with 21.

After West Georgia opened on a 4-0 scoring run, the Texans answered with five consecutive points to swing the advantage. The Texans also got a boost from freshman outside hitter Laci Schoen, who got a kill in her first collegiate start to make it 8-6. The Texans used four straight points later in the opening frame to extend the lead, with a kill from Dinh closing the first set with the Texans winning 25-20.

A back-and-forth second set looked to end in West Georgia's favor when the Wolves went up 24-23 with an opportunity to tie the match. Peterson forced a tied set thanks to a kill, but West Georgia once again made it a set point. As the Texans had turned to a freshman earlier in the match, a first-year collegiate player once again answered the bell.

Davis tied it up at 25 and later made it 26-26 when West Georgia was at its third set point opportunity. Another kill from Davis allowed the Texans the opportunity for a set point themselves, but West Georgia tied it up twice to make it 28-28. Freshmen once again came through and after a kill from Minus, the Texans got the deciding point of the set to win 30-28 and go up 2-0 in the match.

West Georgia countered a response in the third set and found a way to get back in the match. The Wolves forced the Texans to just nine kills and six attack errors for a .081 attack percentage in the third set, allowing West Georgia to take it 25-21.

The Texans ended West Georgia's comeback wish early in the fourth set, stringing six straight points to take command early. A kill from fifth year outside hitter LaNeah Lara allowed the Texans to go ahead 19-10 before West Georgia countered with three straight points. Tarleton State, however, ended the match by getting the final four points capped off by a pair of kills from Davis and a pair of service aces.

Tarleton State is off from match action for a week and starts a three-match road trip on Thursday, Oct. 29 at North Alabama at 6 p.m.
