North Alabama defeats Tarleton State Volleyball in second meeting

FLORENCE, Ala. – North Alabama got its revenge on Tarleton State Volleyball from the Sept. 26 sweep, defeating the Texans 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-18) on Thursday night at CB&S Bank Arena at Flowers Hall.

Tarleton State (9-15, 5-6 UAC) responded to North Alabama's (18-6, 8-3 UAC) .394 second set hitting percentage by winning the third set 25-23. The Lions, however, closed out the match with a .387 attack percentage in the fourth set.

Fifth year outside hitter LaNeah Lara collected a team-high 16 kills, needing just two more for her 1,000th career kill. Setters Peyton Fadal (21) and Kingsley Minus (12) produced double-digit assists while libero Leddy Rae Guinn had her fourth straight match with 20+ digs with 23. Senior middle blocker Madison Frank had six assisted blocks, passing Meg Umbel (2012-15) for seventh on the program's career assisted block list.

Tarleton State quickly answered North Alabama's early 3-0 scoring run by getting five consecutive points to go out in front. Fadal fed Lara for a kill that helped the Texans maintain their lead, with Minus following suit and assisted freshman middle blocker Onita Davis for the kill for Tarleton State to go up 12-10. North Alabama answered with back-to-back kills, taking the lead off a service ace before the media timeout.

Lara tied it up with a kill and Minus gave her team the lead off a service ace later in the first set. The pair of points ignited a spurt that put Tarleton State ahead 21-16. North Alabama, however, answered by going on a 6-1 scoring run and obtained nine of the final 11 points of the first set to take the opening frame 25-23.

The Lions maintained their momentum from the end of the first set, going on another 6-1 scoring run to take an early 10-7 lead in the second set. Tarleton State cut the deficit to one-point later in the frame, but North Alabama never relinquished the lead. UNA hit .394 in the second set en route to a 25-17 victory to go up 2-0 in the match.

With the third set evened at 12, the Texans took charge. A 3-0 scoring run later in the set allowed the Texans to take a three-point lead. North Alabama countered with five unanswered points to swing the advantage, but Tarleton State refused to back down.

Frank captured two points with a kill and a service ace to tie it up before another 3-0 scoring run made it a set point for the Texans. North Alabama got the kill needed to extend the set, but Tarleton State forced an attack error on the next point to clinch the third frame 25-23.

The Lions used two separate 4-0 scoring runs and got six out of seven points to take an early six-point lead in the fourth set. Despite Tarleton State going on a 4-0 scoring run themselves, North Alabama answered with five unanswered points. North Alabama finished the fourth set with 15 kills off just three attack errors to take the set and the match.

Tarleton State stays on the road this weekend with the second meeting with West Georgia in Carrollton, Georgia, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
