Austin Peay defeats Tarleton State Volleyball in five sets

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Tarleton State Volleyball forced a fifth set in Saturday's match at Winfield Dunn Center, but Austin Peay compiled a .733 hit percentage in the final frame to defeat the Texans 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 5-15).

Tarleton State (6-11, 2-2 UAC) accumulated 57 kills off 132 attacks, its best mark on the road in 2026. Austin Peay (10-7, 2-2 UAC), however, finished with 67 kills and a .372 hit percentage to win the five-set match.

Freshman middle blocker Onita Davis matched a season-high 15 kills off a .444 hit percentage. Setters Peyton Fadal (24), Alexis Massey (16), and Kingsley Minus (10) all produced double-digit assists, with Fadal accumulating a season-high. It is the first time since 2023 Tarleton State had three players record 10+ assists in the same match (Sept. 2 vs. UTSA). Libero Leddy Rae Guinn led the Texans defensively with 14 digs.

After Austin Peay went ahead early in the first set, Tarleton State used an early 3-0 scoring run to go up 5-4. Austin Peay answered with a pair of points to retake the lead before kills from middle blockers Madison Frank and Alyssa Dinh tied it again. Following a kill from Davis, the Governors scored three unanswered points to take control of the opening set.

Austin Peay ended the first set with a hit percentage of .414, ending the opening frame on a 3-0 scoring run to go up 1-0 with a 25-19 win in the first set. Tarleton State countered a response in the second set, capturing the next frame.

The Texans took an early 5-1 lead in the second set and weathered Austin Peay's storm by getting back-to-back kills from Madison Rice-Locket and Davis to stay out in front. A service ace from Frank capped off a 3-0 scoring run by the Texans later in the set, allowing the Texans to take a four-point lead.

Austin Peay cut the deficit to two points before the Texans rallied three straight scores to take a five-point advantage. Kills from Rice-Locket and outside hitter LaNeah Lara allowed the Texans to win set two 25-21 and tie the match 1-1.

Tarleton State followed suit in the third set by hitting .429 as a team. Austin Peay, however, answered the bell by hitting .500 in the third set. The strong offense by Austin Peay allowed the Governors to maintain the lead for the entire third set and defeat the Texans in the third frame 25-18 to go up 2-1 in the match.

Austin Peay took an early 8-4 lead in the fourth set, but three straight points from Tarleton State allowed the deficit to be trimmed. A kill from Lara allowed the Texans to go out in front and a 5-0 scoring run pushed the Texans to an 18-15 advantage. Austin Peay answered Tarleton State's scoring run with one of its own, going on a 4-0 scoring spurt to take a one-point lead.

Tarleton State once again took Austin Peay's punch and delivered one back. The Texans ended set four by scoring the final five points of the frame to win 25-21 and force a fifth set.

The fifth set was all Austin Peay, who went on a 7-0 scoring run to open the final frame. The Governors never looked back and took the fifth set 15-5 to end the match in victory.
