Little Rock defeats Tarleton State Volleyball in four sets

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Volleyball won the opening set on Saturday at Wisdom Gym, but Little Rock won three straight sets to defeat the Texans 3-1 (25-17, 14-25, 21-25, 23-25).

Little Rock (10-16, 4-10 UAC) hit .429 in the second frame and .333 in the third set to take a 2-1 lead and eventually get the road win over Tarleton State (11-16, 7-7 UAC).

Fifth year outside hitter LaNeah Lara led the Texans with 11 kills while freshman setter Kingsley Minus had a double-double with 19 assists and 12 digs. Junior libero Leddy Rae Guinn recorded another 20+ dig match with 22 digs on Saturday.

After Tarleton State opened the first set on a 4-0 scoring run, Little Rock countered with a 3-0 scoring run to take an 8-6 lead. A kill from Lara followed by two Little Rock attack errors swung the advantage towards Tarleton State, with back-to-back kills from fifth year outside hitter/opposite Madison Rice-Locket putting the Texans ahead 13-11.

Tarleton State used three different 4-0 scoring runs to conclude the first set in victory. The Texans held Little Rock to just a .047 attack percentage in the opening frame to win 25-17 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Little Rock, however, bounced back in the second set. The Trojans responded to the first set defeat by hitting .429 in the second frame, resulting in a 25-14 win to tie the match 1-1.

The Texans got a boost off the bench in the third set from freshman outside hitter Laci Schoen, who got three kills to help her team obtain a 12-11 lead. Even when Little Rock took control again, the Texans' resiliency resulted in tying the score. After senior opposite Breannah Peterson left the set earlier with an injury, she quickly came back in and collected a kill to make it 19 all.

Despite the Texans getting the next point to take the lead, it was Little Rock who came out on top in set three. The Trojans obtained three of the final four points of the frame to take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-21 victory in the set.

Back-to-back service aces from freshman middle blocker Onita Davis helped push the Texans in front in set four. Little Rock responded by going on a 5-0 scoring run and later scoring four unanswered points to take a four-point lead later in the frame. The Texans refused to quit, going on a 6-0 scoring run capped off by a Davis kill to make it an 18-16 Tarleton State lead.

Little Rock was unfazed by Tarleton State's run, quieting the Texans' offensive storm with a 4-0 scoring run of its own to retake the lead. The Trojans scored three of the final four points of the set to take the set 25-23 and clinch the match.

Tarleton State plays the final two regular season home games of the season at Wisdom Gym starting Thursday, taking on UAC regular season champions Eastern Kentucky at 6 p.m. Tickets start at just $10 and can be purchased online here.
